    • A system (200; 300) and method for messaging subscription management by subscribing a subscriber (210; 310) to a publisher (215; 315), providing a broker (220; 320) brokering message flow between the publisher and the subscriber whereby the publisher publishes information to the broker which then forwards the information to the subscriber, and filtering messages whereby any messages not originating from the publisher are filtered out. The filtering may comprise modifying (227) at the publisher a filter supplied by the subscriber and sending the modified filter to the broker, or may comprise modifying (312) at the subscriber a filter and sending the modified filter to the broker. This gives the behaviour of a direct subscription model, while making use of the efficiencies provided by the brokered model. It allows publishers to offload responsibility for subscription management and message distribution to a broker service, and it can reduce the number of logical connections from n*m to become n+m instead. Subscribers and message sinks are completely unaware that a broker is being used.

    • A service window optimized system alert engine is disclosed for automated generation and delivery of alerts relating to detected conditions of a monitored system. The service window optimized system alert engine comprises a state monitor, a system configuration and history module, an alert generator, and an alert router. The state monitor is configured to send status data of the monitored system to the alert generator. The system configuration and history module provides information to the alert generator specifying an alert generation policy established for the monitored system. The alert generator is configured to process the status data from the state monitor in accordance with the alert generation policy specified by the system configuration and history module to generate at least one alert. The alert router is configured to determine optimal delivery characteristics for the generated alert and to deliver the alert in accordance with the optimal delivery characteristics.

Each of the plurality of user interface sets includes a plurality of user interfaces corresponding to a plurality of user levels of interaction. Each of the plurality of user levels of interaction is associated with a different level of abstraction with respect to processing performed in the data storage system for implementing a request. First user information associated with the user is provided. The first user information identifies one of said plurality of user levels for at least one of the plurality of user interface sets.     • One embodiment of the invention is directed to the containerization of content units that are accessed using an identifier. Applicants have appreciated that file systems sometimes impose limits on the number of files that may be stored therein that are too restrictive. Thus, in one embodiment, multiple content units may be stored in a single file, called a container file, in a file system. Each content unit may have an identifier associated with it. When an accessing entity requests access to a previously-stored content unit and provides the identifier for the content unit, the identifier may be used to locate the container file in which the content unit is stored.

    • A system for authenticating articles comprising: an authentication manager for managing authentication information associated with the articles; a plurality of secure taggant reader instruments for reading machine readable taggants associated with the articles, the taggants including the authentication or related information, and an instrument configuration manager for secure on-line configuration of the instruments. Each taggant reader instrument is operable to securely process and send authentication information derived from a taggant to the authentication manager.
