    • An apparatus and method, for use with the satellite-based communications network, for improving the reliability and speed at which communication between a user terminal and the network is established. The apparatus and method arranges data of a channel request message transmitted from a user terminal to a satellite in the satellite-based network to insure that the most critical data for establishing communication between the user terminal and the satellite-based network is received at the satellite during the appropriate receiving time frame window. The channel request message includes a first data group necessary for establishing a communication link for which information is transmitted between the apparatus and the network, and a second data group including information for decreasing the amount time necessary to establish the communication link. The first data group is positioned at the center of the channel request message, with portions of the second data group at opposite ends of the channel request message. The time at which the user terminal transmits the channel request message is set based on a location of the apparatus within a spot beam, to take into account the appropriate propagation delay time for the message to travel from the apparatus to the satellite in the network, thus assuring that at least the first data group of the channel request message is received at the satellite during an appropriate receiving time frame window.

    • An apparatus and method, for use in a satellite-based communications network, for minimizing blocking of communication between the network and access terminals resulting from differences in the signal propagation delays for the access terminals due to their different locations within a coverage area serviced by a spot beam generated by a satellite in the network. The apparatus includes a spot beam segregator which segregates a coverage area of the spot beam into at least one coverage zone based on the maximum and minimum propagation delay experienced by access terminals within the coverage area of the spot beam. The apparatus further includes a carrier grouper which groups the carrier into a number of groups corresponding to the number of offset zones, and assigns each carrier group to a respective one of the coverage zones. The number of carriers assigned to each carrier group is proportional to the estimated number of access terminals located in the respective coverage zone to which the carrier group is assigned. The apparatus assigns a respective burst offset to each respective coverage zone so that signals being transmitted by the satellite and access terminals within the coverage zone are transmitted in accordance with the same burst offset. Accordingly, burst signals are arranged efficiently in the TDMA time frames being transmitted over the carriers between the satellite and access terminals, which therefore minimizes call blocking.

    • A mobile satellite (MSAT) system is provided for establishing a single-hop terminal-to-terminal call between two terminals. The MSAT system maintains a signaling path between each terminal and a gateway station during the terminal-to-terminal call although a call path between the mobile switching center and the originating terminal is blocked by the satellite. During single-hop call establishment, satellite channels for the terminal-to-terminal call path and for signaling are allocated. The allocated channels are assigned when a direct satellite link for the terminal-to-terminal call is established; otherwise, the call can proceed as a double-hop call using previously assigned satellite channels. A verification signal is sent on the direct satellite link which is for processing by the terminals and which contains information that causes the signal to be ignored by a gateway station. During a single-hop terminal-to-terminal call, signaling from a destination gateway station to an originating terminal at another gateway station is sent via an intranetwork communication system connecting traffic control subsystems in different gateway stations and the satellite channels allocated to the originating terminal

    • Two types of contention channels are used to accommodate broadband packet data in a satellite communication network. A first contention channel is used by unsynchronized user terminals to access the system and request a traffic channel. The first contention channel is of a sufficient duration to accommodate a RACH message, as well as the timing uncertainty between user terminals within a given spot beam. A second contention channel is shorter in duration than the first contention channel, and is narrowband, so that more than one second contention channel may be transmitted within the bandwidth of the broadband traffic channels. The second contention channels are used by synchronized user terminals for transmitting packet RACH, or PRACH, messages. The more efficient nature of the PRACH channels accommodates the increased overhead associated with bursty packet data, without the capacity cost of the longer duration RACH channel.
