    • The method of transmitting traffic information about a traffic obstruction on a traffic way with digital coded messages includes coding a coded location contained in a location data bank, which amounts to an approximate position of the traffic obstruction on the traffic way, and a section part of the traffic way between the coded location and an actual position of the traffic obstruction on the traffic way in a traffic message and then transmitting the traffic message. In addition the length of the traffic obstruction can be included in the traffic message. In a preferred embodiment the traffic message is a TMC traffic message coded with ALERT-C protocol. In which the section part is coded in label 12 and the length in label 2.

    • A device for coding and decoding locations in a transportation network, providing that information concerning these locations are transmitted from one transmitter to one receiver. In the device, the code is composed of a declaration portion and a coordinate portion corresponding to each coded location. The coordinate portion includes a plurality of coordinate pairs, one coordinate pair representing the coordinates of the coded location stored on the transmitter side and at least one other coordinate pair representing an auxiliary point. The declaration portion includes at least the number of coordinate pairs contained in the coordinate portion, the position of the coordinate pair of the coded location in the coordinate portion, and an indication of the type of coded location. For decoding purposes, locations falling within the tolerance range of the received coordinate pairs are determined in a location database that contains the coordinates, the position at any time on the traffic route and additional location information. Of the specified locations, the ones situated on a common traffic route are selected; and of these selected locations, the one that falls within the tolerance range of the specified coordinate pair can be defined as the decoded location.

    • A method for taking into account supplementary traffic information for operating an onboard travel control system of a motor vehicle, containing an internal digital road map, by transferring a point of origin and destination to a central computer and transmitting, to the onboard travel control system of the motor vehicle, a route plan drawn up in the central computer, taking into account the supplementary traffic information is achieved, at low data transmission rates and maintaining short transmission times, by providing the internal digital road map of the onboard travel control system with information about location codes; by transmitting the route plan by specifying route segments that are defined by the location codes and lie between the point of origin and the destination; and by modifying the transmitted route segments in the internal digital road map of the travel control system so that they are taken into account as a higher priority than non-transmitted route segments during the subsequent route selection carried out in the onboard travel control system.
