    • A color display system includes a cathode-ray tube and yoke. The yoke is a non-converging type. The cathode-ray tube has an electron gun for generating and directing three electron beams, a center beam and two outer beams, along paths toward a screen of the tube. The electron gun includes electrodes that comprise a beam-forming region and electrodes that form a main focusing lens. The main focusing lens is formed by at least two focusing electrodes. The focusing electrode closest to the beam-forming region includes at least two spaced parts. Each spaced part forms a portion of a dipole lens structure in the path of an outer electron beam. Means are provided for applying to at least one of the spaced parts a dynamic signal which is related to the deflection of the electron beams.

    • The novel CRT includes a color-selection structure which comprises a first electrode having a plurality of column and row elements forming a plurality of apertures, and a second electrode including an array of conductors electrically insulated from the first electrode. The plurality of apertures in the first electrode comprise alternate columns of first and second apertures. The first apertures have a width less than the width of the second apertures which are intersected by the conductors of the second electrodes to form first and second windows. The CRT also includes a viewing screen comprising an array of substantially parallel phosphor stripes of three different emission colors arranged in cyclic order in adjacent triads. Each of the triads of phosphor stripes is associated with a column of first and second windows and a column of first apertures. The column of first apertures is aligned with one of the phosphor stripes of the triad and is flanked on one side by a column of first windows and on the other side by a column of second windows. A method of producing an image screen using the novel color-selection structure is also disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: (a) providing the conductors of the second electrode of the color-selection structure with an opaque light blocking structure to temporarily close the first and second windows, (b) projecting light through the first apertures of the first electrode whereby to photodeposit the screen, and (c) then removing the opaque light blocking structure from the conductors of the second electrode to open the first and second windows.

    • A color display system includes a cathode-ray tube and self-converging yoke that produces an astigmatic magnetic deflection field within the tube. The tube has an electron gun for generating and directing three electron beams along paths toward a screen. The gun includes beam-forming region electrodes, main focusing lens electrodes, and two electrodes for forming a multipole lens between the beam-forming region and the main focusing lens in each of the electron beam paths. Each multipole lens is oriented to provide a correction to an associated electron beam to at least partially compensate for the effect of the astigmatic magnetic deflection field on that beam. A first multipole lens electrode is located between the beam-forming region electrodes and the main focusing lens electrodes. A second multipole electrode is connected to a main focusing lens electrode and located between the first multipole lens electrode and the main focusing lens, adjacent to the first multipole lens electrode. Means are included for applying a fixed focus voltage to the second multipole lens electrode and a dynamic voltage signal, related to the deflection of the electron beams to the first multipole lens electrode. Each multipole lens is located sufficiently close to the main focusing lens to cause the strength of the main focusing lens to vary as a function of voltage variation of the dynamic voltage signal.

    • A cathode-ray tube includes a display screen having an array of phosphor stripes of three different emission colors arranged in cyclic order in adjacent triads. The tube further includes an electron gun for producing three convergent inline electron beams directed toward the display screen. A color selection structure is positioned between the display screen and the electron gun. The color selection structure includes a metal masking plate having therein an array of apertures arranged in columns that are substantially parallel to the phosphor stripes. The color selection structure further includes beam-influencing strips of insulation disposed on the masking plate which, in combination with the masking plate, define an array of windows for transmitting therethrough portions of the electron beams. A high voltage contact is provided for applying a potential to the metal masking plate and to the display screen. The strips of insulation are parallel to the phosphor stripes of the display screen. The strips of insulation are charged to a focusing potential by secondary electrons incident thereon and emanating from the display screen as a result of impingement thereon of the electron beams from the electron gun.

The electron gun assembly comprises three electron guns each including electrodes that comprise a beam-forming region and electrodes that form a main focusing lens in the path of each electron beam. The main focusing lens is formed by at least two focusing electrodes. The focusing electrode closest to the beam-forming region includes a separated part adjacent to the paths of each of the electron beams. Each separated part forms a portion of the dipole lens structure in the path of an electron beam. Means are provided for applying dynamic signals to the separated parts which are related to the deflection of the electron beams. The dipole lens structures establish electrostatic dipole fields in the path of the three electron beams that cause the beams to converge at the screen for all angles of deflection.
