    • A recoil starter capable of readily staring an engine and reducing the number of components and manufacturing costs thereof and reducing a size and weight thereof. The recoil starter is so constructed that a rotational force accumulated in a cushioning and force accumulating means interposed between a rope reel and a cam is transmitted via the cam to a drive pulley, to thereby start the engine. A ratchet mechanism is provided between the rope reel and the cam so as to uncouple the cam from the rope reel when the rope reel is rotated in an engine starting direction and so as to couple the cam to the rope reel when the rope reel is rotated in a direction opposite to the engine starting direction, thus rotating the cam and the rope reel together in said opposite direction.

    • According to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a recoil starter including: a case includes a support shaft formed thereon; a rope reel rotatably disposed on the support shaft; a recoil rope wound on the rope reel; a recoil spring that rotationally energizes the rope reel; a cam of an engine side; a power storing spring interposed between the rope reel and the cam; and a ratchet mechanism interposed between the rope reel and the cam. The ratchet mechanism includes: a ratchet shaft formed on the rope reel, a ratchet member having: a base portion oscillatably and slidably supported through an elongated hole on the ratchet shaft, and a ratchet pawl engageable with an engaging portion of the cam, and an energizer that energizes the base portion toward an uneven inner peripheral surface of the case.

The reel and the plunger are separate members contained in the case and cover and are detachably connected to each other, the reel being intermittently rotated by moving the plunger in the axial direction and the case and the reel separating from the plunger when the case and the cover are detached from each other.

    • A recoil starter is provided which prevents malfunction, such as disengagement of a claw, after the engine is started repeatedly even if the starter is not made of a material of high intensity. A spring can be wound substantially precisely circularly. It is quite easy to mount a friction plate to the starter. Furthermore, this subassembly does not loosen after long-term usage. A rope guide can be easily mounted to the starter case, thus reducing the fabrication cost. The recoil starter can be placed and locked in position relative to a fan cover with high accuracy. When the ratchet is in its protruded position, the pivotal point of the ratchet is located radially inside a pulley around the position where the pulley engages the ratchet. A ratchet support portion is formed radially outside the pulley on the reel. The ratchet forms a beam supported at its both ends. The beam acts against a force exerted by the pulley due to a resistance produced when the engine is started. A cover is mounted at the top end of the support portion to prevent the ratchet from moving toward the top end of the ratchet. A cylindrical engaging portion is formed on the outer surface of the stem of the starter case. One end of the spring engages this engaging portion. A rope takeout port is formed in the outer surface of the case such that the rope is payed out while tilted upwardly from a horizontal plane. The rope guide made of a hard material and acting to guide the rope is fitted over the case between the rope takeout port and the reel.
