    • A projection display device that includes: a light source unit 1 that includes a discharge lamp 2 as a light source; an image formation unit; a projection optical system; and a light source cooling unit that cools the light source unit. The light source unit is disposed so that a lamp axis that connects two discharge electrodes of the discharge lamp is orthogonal to a projecting direction of the projection optical system, and the light source unit includes: a concave mirror 3; and a transparent part 4 that covers an opening of the concave mirror. The light source cooling unit includes: a blowing fan that supplies cooling air; a plurality of air blowing ports 6a and 6b disposed at the concave mirror or a connecting part that connects the concave mirror and the transparent part; an air duct 9 that connects the air blowing ports and the blowing fan; a branch switching valve 10a that is disposed in the air duct and switches between a plurality of branch flow paths so as to allow the cooling air to flow therethrough; and a control valve that is provided for each of the air blowing ports and rotated around a supporting axis by the action of gravity depending on a posture of the light source cooling unit, thereby controlling a wind direction so that the cooling air is blown from above the discharge lamp. The top of the light source lamp is cooled effectively regardless of the installation posture of the projection display device.

    • A white light beam from a light source portion (201) is separated into respective light beams of red, green and blue by a color separation optical system (204). The respective light beams are reflected by a rotating polygon mirror (207), travel via a second optical system (210) and form belt-like illuminated regions on an image display panel (212). By a rotation of the rotating polygon mirror (207), the illuminated regions of the respective light beams move continuously, and each pixel of the image display panel (212) is driven by a signal corresponding to a color of light entering this pixel. An image on the image display panel (212) is magnified and projected onto a screen by a projection optical system (216). The color separation optical system (204) has first and second reflecting mirrors that respectively reflect the respective light beams of red, green and blue, and these reflecting mirrors are arranged so that optical paths of the respective light beams have equal lengths from the light source portion (201) to the rotating polygon mirror (207). This makes it possible to provide a small projection-type image display apparatus that has a high efficiency of light utilization and can display an image with high resolution and enhanced color uniformity.

    • A projection type display apparatus includes a plurality of light sources 7a-7d, a display device unit 5, a light-combining unit 3 that combines output light from the plural light sources, a condensing unit 4 that propagates output light from the light-combining unit to the display device unit, and a projecting unit 6 that projects an image by the use of output light from the display device unit. In the projection type display apparatus, cooling units having fans 21a-21d are disposed respectively on the plural light sources, and a controlling unit 31 is provided to control the cooling units. Information regarding the lighting state of the plural light sources is inputted into the controlling unit, and the controlling unit controls a rotation rate of the fans of the cooling units with reference to the information. Concerning a case of temperature management of a plurality of light sources used, an accurate and reliable control is performed; problems such as whitening of the light sources, degradation of life property, blacking, brightness degradation and the like are suppressed, thereby high quality and high reliability are obtained.
