    • An automatic transmission, for a vehicle with an engine, includes a hydraulic fluid pump which supplies pressurized hydraulic fluid. It is detected whether or not the engine is being started, and the pump output is controlled so as to be decreased when the engine is being started. If the pump is one whose output per one revolution of its input member is variable, then its output may be thus controlled by decreasing its output per one revolution when the engine is being started. And, if the pump is a variable capacity type vane type hydraulic fluid pump the output of which per one revolution of its input member is controlled by varying the eccentric position of a controlling member thereof, then its output per one revolution may be thus controlled by varying this eccentric position to give a pump output per one revolution decreased when the engine is being started. Alternatively, if the pump is a fixed capacity type electrically driven type hydraulic fluid pump the output of which per one revolution of its input member is substantially constant, then its output may be thus controlled by decreasing the rotation speed of its input member, possibly to zero, when the engine is being started. A system for implementing this method is also disclosed.

    • An automatic transmission has a gear transmission mechanism with a forward clutch which is engaged when the gear transmission mechanism is engaged to a forward speed stage, a one way clutch which is in cooperation with the forward clutch provides a first speed stage by rotation prevention, and a brake which, when engaged, in cooperation with the one way clutch prevents the power output shaft of the gear transmission mechanism from rotating in the direction to allow reverse motion of the vehicle. An idling control system for the transmission includes a first mechanism for engaging the forward clutch selectively either to a maximum amount or to an intermediate amount substantially lower than the maximum amount; a second mechanism for engaging the brake, when the forward clutch is thus engaged to the intermediate amount by the first mechanism; and a third mechanism for, when the automatic transmission is being operated in a forward driving mode, the vehicle is substantially stationary, and the engine is in substantially idling condition, actuating the first mechanism thus to engage the forward clutch to the intermediate amount and the second mechanism thus to engage the brake. Thereby, rolling of the vehicle backwards down a hill while waiting in the stopped condition with the engine idling is positively prevented, and starting off of the vehicle is also facilitated.

    • An automatic transmission has a gear transmission mechanism with a a forward clutch which is engaged when the gear transmission mechanism is engaged to a forward speed stage, a one way clutch which is in cooperation with the forward clutch provides a first speed stage by rotation prevention, and a brake which, when engaged, in cooperation with the one way clutch prevents the power output shaft of the gear transmission mechanism from rotating in the direction to allow reverse motion of the vehicle. An idling control system for the transmission includes a first mechanism for engaging the forward clutch selectively either to a maximum amount or to an intermediate amount; a second means for selectively engaging the brake; and a third mechanism for controlling the first and second mechanism. When the transmission is in a forward driving mode, the vehicle is substantially stationary, the engine is substantially idling, and the braking system is applied, the third mechanism engages the forward clutch to the intermediate amount and engages the brake. Thereafter, if the application of the braking system is terminated, it engages the forward clutch to the maximum amount and continues engaging the brake, or, if the engine ceases to be in substantially idling condition, it engages the forward clutch to the maximum amount and disengages the brake. Thereby, rolling of the vehicle backwards down a hill while waiting in the stopped condition with the engine idling is positively prevented, and mild traffic creep is also provided.

    • An automatic transmission, for a vehicle with an engine, includes a hydraulic fluid pump which supplies pressurized hydraulic fluid. The engine load is detected, and the pump output is controlled so as to increase with increase of the load on the engine.     • A hydraulic control system for an automatic transmission including a fluid coupling type torque converter, and a gear system provided with two or more frictional devices adapted to establish two or more speed conditions. The hydraulic control system includes a hydraulic pressure source, a line pressure control valve receiving pressure from the hydraulic pressure source to generate a regulated line pressure, a throttle pressure control valve for generating a throttle pressure commensurate with the intake throttle opening, a governor pressure control valve for generating a governor pressure commensurate with the vehicle speed, a detent regulator valve receiving the line pressure to generate a regulated detent pressure, a manual valve for enabling manual shifts of the transmission, two or more shift valves for shifting the paths of the line pressure to the frictional engaging devices in response to the opposingly acting forces of the throttle pressure and governor pressure, the shift valves including one shift valve operative to establish the highest speed ratio for the transmission, and a control valve provided in the shift valve for the highest speed ratio and adapted to draw in the detent pressure when the intake throttle valve is opened substantially to a full extent, in a manner to offset the throttle pressure acting on the highest shift valve, thereby controlling the highest shift valve according to a balancing relation between the detent pressure and the governor pressure.
