    • A data reading device for a camera can provide a data being accurate with high probability through repeated data reading of a code pattern on a film cartridge even in hard conditions, such as a condition where contact between contact terminals of the device and code regions of the code pattern is unstable and a condition where the resistance value of a conductive code region is comparatively high or varies with the area on which the corresponding contact terminal abuts. In one operation example of an embodiment, the device discriminates consistency and inconsistency between the contents of the successively read data bit by bit and substitutes the contents of the later read data discriminated as being inconsistent for those of the previously read data only when the inconsistency discriminated contents of the later read data indicate conduction of the corresponding code regions. The previously read data is thus renewed again and again so as to more accurately correspond to the data indicated by the code regions of the code pattern.

    • An electronic instrument, such as a camera, which is supplied with electric power from a battery and selectively receives two kinds of batteries which are different from each other in shape and output voltage. A battery chamber of the electronic instrument is constructed to commonly receive the first and second batteries such that a space of the battery chamber is commonly occupied by parts of the first and second batteries. Additionally, a member is projected into the battery chamber and determines which kind of batteries is received. In response to the result of the determination, a voltage converting means converts the output voltage of the battery to a given voltage such that an electionic circuit of the electronic instrument operates with the optimum voltage condition with the voltage supplied from either one of the batteries which are different from each other in shape and output voltage.

    • A camera having a remote controller. The automatic focusing mechanism of the camera measures a distance from the camera to a main object positioned within approximately the center region of a focus area and automatically obtains a in-focus condition in correspondence with the measured object distance. The camera includes a memory for storing a maximum object distance at which in-focus conditions are obtained by the automatic focusing mechanism in a remote control photographing mode. When the main object is photographed in the remote control photographing mode, a comparing device compares an object distance measured by the automatic focusing mechanism and the maximum object distance set in the memory with each other. If the measured object distance is less than the maximum object distance, an optical system is adjusted to a normal photographing mode. If the main object is positioned outside the focus area and the object distance measured by the automatic focusing mechanism is longer than the maximum object distance, the measured data is altered to the maximum object distance. According to a modified camera having the automatic focusing mechanism and an automatic exposure mechanism, in a photographing under the same light condition, an aperture size in the remote control mode is set to be larger than an aperture size set by the automatic exposure mechanism in the normal photographing mode.

    • The motor drive device according to the present invention drives a motor until a hold signal disappears and the motor is braked when the holding signal disappears. After a predetermined period from the time when the holding signal disappears, it is detected whether or not a completion position signal representing that the load has reached the normal complete position is output. If the completion position signal is not output, the motor is started again. The load is driven until the load reaches the position where the completion position signal is output, and then the motor is braked. Thus the load can be stopped at the correct position. Also, with the motor drive device according to the present invention, the motor may be braked after the load is driven by a predetermined amount. After a predetermined period has passed therefrom, it is detected whether or not a signal representing that the load is normally driven is output, and if the signal is not ouput, the motor is started again. The load is driven until the signal is output and then the motor is braked. Thus, the load can be correctly driven.
