    • Producing a fuel cell including preparing a plurality of composite units each including an interconnector sandwiched between a first insulating layer and a second insulating layer, forming a groove extending substantially parallel to a direction in which the interconnector extends, in which the first insulating layer and the second insulating layer each have an upper surface and a lower surface and the groove is formed either in the upper surface of the first insulating layer or the lower surface of the second insulating layer or in both the upper surface of the first insulating layer and the lower surface of the second insulating layer. The method further includes spacing the plurality of composite units such that the first insulating layer and the second insulating layer of the composite units adjacent to each other face each other; forming an electrolyte membrane between two of the composite units adjacent to each other.

    • A membrane electrode assembly is used for a planer type fuel cell. The membrane electrode assembly includes an electrolyte membrane, anodes and cathodes disposed counter to the anodes. Ends of current collectors are connected to one side of the anodes, respectively. Ends of current collectors are connected to one side of the cathodes, respectively. On a cathode side, the current collectors are provided in positions opposed respectively to the insulators provided on an anode side with the electrolyte membrane interposed in between. A cathode-side current collection and an anode-side current collector are connected by an interconnector, and adjacent cells are electrically connected in series with each other.

    • A Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) is provided in which the structure is simplified and the thickness is reduced without impairing diffusibility of fuel, air and generated products. An anode catalyst layer and a cathode catalyst layer sandwich an electrolyte membrane. Liquid fuel stored in a fuel chamber is directly supplied to the anode catalyst layer. Current collectors are respectively provided adjacent to the anode catalyst layer and the cathode catalyst layer. Each of the current collectors is formed of a flat conductive sheet in which a plurality of fine pores is provided to extend through the current collector in a direction substantially perpendicular to the planar direction. A part or the entirety of each current collector is embedded in a respective catalyst layer, and the sides of each current collector defining the pores are tapered with respect to a direction substantially perpendicular to the planar direction of the catalyst layer in which the current collector is embedded.
