A method for combined relay node operation includes determining an operating mode of the combined relay node, where the combined relay node includes a repeater and a relay. The method also includes if the operating mode is repeater on mode, amplifying and forwarding received signals, and storing subframes, where subframes are demodulated and decoded versions of the received signals. The method further includes if the operating mode is repeater off mode, amplifying and forwarding a control zone of signals received while the operating mode is repeater off mode, and transmitting subframes stored while the operating mode is repeater on mode.

    • A method of reverse link power control for a reverse packet data channel in a wireless communication system allows a mobile station to autonomously change its data transmission rate. The mobile station transmits packet data over a reverse packet data channel having a data rate variant transmit power level that varies based on a transmit data rate on the packet data channel. The mobile station further transmits control signals over a reverse control channel associated with the reverse packet data channel. The transmit power level of the reverse control channel is such that the transmit power level does not vary with the transmit data rate on the packet data channel. The radio base station measures the strength of the received signals on the reverse control channel, compares the measured strength to a power control set point, and generates a power control signal responsive to the comparison of the control signal to the power control set point.

    • Mobile terminals in a high data rate CDMA system may be placed in a control hold mode wherein reverse link control channels are gated, or transmitted at a reduced duty cycle. Mode decisions are based on the activity of the mobile terminal in both the forward and reverse links. A forward link inactivity timer is maintained at the base station that schedules forward link communications to a mobile terminal. The reverse link inactivity timer may be maintained at the same base station, at a different base station in the mobile terminal's active set, or at the base station controller. The forward link inactivity timer may follow the mobile terminal's selection of best forward link serving base station in handoff. When both the forward and reverse link inactivity timers have expired, and no forward link data is pending, the mobile terminal may be commanded to a control hold mode.

    • A distributed transmit diversity system based on OFDM signaling transmits a broadcast/multicast service signal from one or more first base stations and from one or more second base stations, wherein the first and second base stations transmit orthogonalized pilots. Correspondingly, a remote receiver, e.g., a mobile station, resolves the orthogonal pilots and makes independent channel estimates relative to the first and second base stations for improved diversity reception. Pilots are orthogonalized between the first and second base stations by using orthogonal space-time or space-frequency block coding. For example, in one embodiment, a first pilot tone pair is interleaved with data tones in the OFDM data blocks being transmitted from the first base stations, while an orthogonal second pilot tone pair is interleaved with data tones in the same OFDM data blocks being synchronously transmitted from the second base stations.

    • A method and apparatus to provide a deterministic power control mechanism for the transmission of mobile station power control commands based on transmitting non-power control commands for which mobile stations exhibit deterministic, observable responses at related transmit powers, e.g., at the same power. For example, a wireless network base station may adjust the target used for sending power control commands to a given mobile station by observing whether that mobile station correctly responds to rate control or retransmit control commands sent at the same transmit power. The mobile station's response (or non-response) to such non-power control commands is readily observable and can be taken as an indication of whether the power target is sufficient for current radio conditions. Although not so limited, this approach may be particularly beneficial where non-power control commands are sent along with the power commands on a sub-channel of a common power control channel.
