    • Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate performing fast cell selection in a user device wherein the user device can select a serving sector from a list of sectors in its virtual active set (VAS), while in communication with a wireless network. The serving sector can be different from a nominal sector whose scrambling code the user device employs for transmission on the uplink, which scrambling code can be known to all sectors listed in the VAS for the user device. In this manner, all sectors in whose coverage area the user device is located can be included in the user device's VAS and can receive and demodulate transmissions there from.

    • Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate increasing throughput in a time-division duplexed CDMA wireless communication environment. A set of orthogonal Walsh code sequences can be assigned to a first group of users in a network sector, and a duplicate set of orthogonal Walsh code sequences can be assigned to at least a second group of users in the sector. A number of receive antennas equal or greater than to the number of duplicate code sets being assigned can be deployed to linearly scale sector capacity to meet user demand. Additionally, user devices employing duplicate Walsh code sequence assignments at a base station serving the sector can be distinguished from each other, and timing offsets between such users can be enforced to mitigate any jamming effect at the base station receiver. Still furthermore, user device channel requirements in the sector can be continuously evaluated and an appropriate number of antennas can be dynamically deployed to provide scalable service to all such user devices.

    • Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate supporting uplink soft handoff in a UMTS TDD wireless communication environment. A virtual active set (VAS) for each user device can be generated at the network side of the communication environment, and sectors listed in each VAS can be informed of their respective listings. Sectors in a user device's VAS can be provided with a scrambling code and resource assignments from a nominal sector serving the user device, which information can be employed to attempt to receive and demodulate uplink signals from the user device at all base stations in the VAS thereof. Additionally, such resources can be employed to transmit power control and reverse activity commands to the user device on the downlink.

    • Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate defining new control channels in legacy wireless networks. Control data resources for new systems can be defined over resources reserved for general data communications in the legacy wireless network specification. In this regard, legacy devices can still be supported by devices implementing new control data resources, and the new control data resources can avoid substantial interference that is typically exhibited over legacy control and/or reference signal resources by instead using the general data resources. In addition, new system devices can avoid scheduling data communication resources over the new control resources to create a substantially non-interfered global control segment. Control data can be transmitted over the segment using beacon-based technologies, reuse schemes, and/or the like.
