    • An x-ray imaging system includes a detector positioned to receive x-rays, an x-ray tube configured to generate x-rays toward the detector from a focal spot surface, the x-ray tube includes a target having the focal spot surface, a cathode support arm, and a cathode attached to the cathode support arm. The cathode includes a split cathode cup having a first portion and a second portion that is separate from the first portion, the first and second portions having respective first and second emitter attachment surfaces, and a flat emitter that is attached to the first and second emitter attachment surfaces such that, when an electrical current is provided to the first portion of the cathode cup, the current passes through the flat emitter and returns through the second portion of the cathode cup such that electrons emit from the flat emitter and toward the focal spot surface.

    • A system and method for controlling the temperature of both an electron emitter and a filament to their lowest possible operating temperature is disclosed. The apparatus includes a filament, an electron emitter heated by the filament to generate an electron beam, and a power supply configured to supply power to each of the filament and the electron emitter. The apparatus also includes a control system to control a supply of power to each of the filament and the electron emitter, with the control system being configured to receive an input indicative of a desired electron emitter operating temperature, cause a desired voltage to be applied between the electron emitter and the filament, and cause a desired voltage to be applied to the filament based on the desired emitter element operating temperature, so as to minimize an operating temperature of the electron emitter and the filament.

    • A cathode cup is provided. The cathode cup includes one or more pockets; and one or more filaments associated with the one or more pockets. A same number of pockets as filaments are present. Each pocket is associated with exactly one filament and is configured to have a length that is tailored to a length of the filament. The cathode cup can be used in an X-ray system having an anode and a cathode. A method of electron beam shaping is provided. The method includes the following steps. A computer-simulated model of a cathode cup is created. The model is used to predict focal spot dimensions. The predicted focal spot dimensions are compared to desired focal spot dimensions. The steps of creating, using and comparing are repeated until the predicted focal spot dimensions match the desired focal spot dimensions. A cathode cup is created based on the computer-simulated model.

The cathode assembly (43) includes a one-piece tab assembly (52) for simple and relatively quick installation on a cathode cup (44). In one embodiment, the one-piece tab assembly (52) has two rail portions (56) extending substantially across its length. These rail portions (56) are intended for insertion into channels (50) formed within the cathode cup (44) and for properly locating the one-piece tab assembly (52) in a desired position relative to the filament (46). The assembly (52) further includes two tab portions (58, 58″) located on opposing ends of the rail portions (56). The tab portions (58, 58″) each include a main body portion (62) and a flap portion (54) extending from the main body portion (62). The main body portion (62) extends between the two rail portions (56) and has a mounting surface for attaching the one-piece tab assembly (52) to the cathode cup (44). The flap portions (54) extend substantially perpendicular from the main body portions (62) and direct the electron beam emitted by the filament (46).
