    • A battery charging circuit having two levels of safety protection is provided. The circuit is said to have “two levels” of safety because if any one component fails (either as a short circuit or as an open circuit) the remainder of the charging circuit ensures that a rechargeable battery coupled to the circuit will not be overcharged. The circuit includes both hardware and firmware protection components, with a microprocessor providing the firmware protection. Overvoltage protection, voltage regulation and current regulation are provided, along with a microprocessor capable of sensing a plurality of voltages across the circuit. The overvoltage protection, voltage regulator and current regulator each include safety actuation points. In parallel, the microprocessor may isolate a rechargeable battery from the cell if voltage and current minimums and maximums are exceeded. The microprocessor further is able to isolate the battery from the circuit if the power dissipation in the voltage regulator, the current regulator or the overall charging circuit is exceeded, provided the microprocessor has decremented current to a minimum level.

    • A charging circuit is provided for coupling a power source to a plurality of loads. The circuit includes a controller that continually senses the output voltage of the power source. The controller may also decouple the power source from the loads to measure the open circuit voltage of the power source. Once the open circuit voltage is known, the controller establishes a threshold voltage that is slightly below the open circuit voltage of the power supply. The controller then begins delivering current to one of the loads by way of a current regulator. Whenever the power source voltage is below the threshold voltage, the controller reduces the current flowing through the current regulator. When the power source voltage is above the threshold voltage, the controller increases the current flowing through the current regulator. In so doing, the charging circuit simultaneously charges both loads, thereby reducing overall charge time.

    • This invention is a wireless, speakerphone accessory that allows the user to be in either public or private communication with a remote electronic device like a mobile telephone. The accessory includes a detachable ear bud that can be worn in a user's ear so that only the user hears the audio signal being received. When the ear bud is coupled to the speakerphone accessory, the circuitry in the ear bud is used to control a loudspeaker and other components in the accessory so as to convert the combined device in to a speakerphone that may be heard by the user and others in his immediate vicinity. The speakerphone accessory optionally includes pockets for receiving rechargeable batteries, as well as utility pockets for holding spare components like ear sleeves. The invention not only offers the dual functionality of private and public operating modes, but serves as a self-retaining case to greatly reduce the chances that any of the components become lost.

    • A light emitting charger is provided. The light emitting charger delivers light energy to a portable electronic device having a rechargeable battery. The electronic device is equipped with a photovoltaic energy conversion device that converts the transferred light into an electrical current that can be used to charge the battery. Through alternate communication mechanisms, the electronic device can alert the charger as to when to illuminate the light sources and which light sources to illuminate. The charger is equipped with photo detectors for receiving photo communication from the electronic device. In one embodiment, the charger periodically pulses one or more light sources until it receives light reflected from reflective material disposed along the electronic device. When the reflective light is received, the charger may actuate a plurality of light sources in a predetermined pattern corresponding to the amount or location of the reflective light. In another embodiment, the electronic device is equipped with a photo communication light source, and may communicate with the charger through pulsed light.

    • This invention includes a universal base unit having a plurality of cables, each corresponding to a unique electronic host device. The cable is manufactured such that the ground connection of the electronic host device is routed to one of a plurality of identification pins. In one embodiment, the identification pins are coupled to a plurality of current sense resistors. When the cable is coupled serially between the electronic device and the universal base unit, the universal base unit identifies the unique electronic device by sensing which resistor is connected to the ground of the electronic host. In another embodiment, pull-up resistors are used instead of current sense resistors. The system allows a user to carry a single power supply or universal base unit with multiple cables as opposed to having to transport a different accessory for each electronic device.
