    • A vehicle bumper beam includes front, rear, top and bottom walls and parallel reinforcement walls that define upper and lower tubes. The front wall includes a vertical section, an angled section, and a bent section on the upper tube. The reinforcement wall supports the angled section below the bent section to provide predictable and desired energy absorption. The angled section preferably includes an angled portion defining a first vertical dimension in the first tube and the vertical section defining a second vertical dimension, with a ratio of the first and second being about 1:3. In one embodiment, the upper and lower tubes are spaced apart.

    • A bumper system includes a rollformed tubular beam with bracket mounts welded to a rear surface for mounting to vehicle frame rails. The illustrated beam has a continuous tubular cross section for its entire length, and includes a center section, corner-forming end sections, and mounting sections connecting ends of the center section to the end sections. The center, end and mounting sections can be linear or similarly curved or differently curved. The center, end and mounting sections can be similarly or differently locally annealed as part of being tuned to specific impact loading criteria, including annealing all or part of cross-sectional areas. The annealing can be done in-line with a rollforming process, such as to assist with forming tight radii in the beam for meeting packaging/space-related requirements, or can be part of a secondary process for advantageously affecting impact strengths in selected localized areas.

    • Wireless communication methods and systems using multiple sectored cells. In one example, each cell of a cellular coverage area is divided into a number of sectors. A number of different half duplex or full duplex channels are used in each cell to communicate between a base station and a number of subscriber stations located in the cell. At least some of the channels may be reused in other cells of the coverage area. Additionally, some channels may be reused both amongst sectors of a given cell and in other cells of the coverage area. The sectored cells are arranged with respect to one other such that interference amongst similarly oriented sectors of different cells using one or more same channels is reduced. In another example, two adjacent cells are arranged with respect to each other such that sectors of the two cells that are similarly oriented approximately along a bore axis of the two cells, and in which radiation is transmitted in the two cells in essentially a same direction approximately along the bore axis, use different channels.

    • A bumper system includes a “W” or “C” shaped beam having a back wall and mounts along the back wall adapted for attaching the beam to rails of a vehicle frame. An energy absorber engages a face of the beam and has rearwardly-extending energy-absorbing sections that extend through the face into contact with the back wall at each of the mounts for improved energy absorption. The horizontal walls of the beam have front and rear sections that align, but also have a U-shaped intermediate section that weakens the walls for promoting a more uniform and predictable collapse. A one-piece brace includes diagonal straps that hold free ends of top and bottom walls together to prevent premature spreading apart upon impact. The energy absorber includes energy-absorbing sections that extend past the straps to detentingly engage the intermediate sections of the beam.

    • A plenum mounted, flat metal panel diaphragm masking loudspeaker includes a flat, stamped sheet metal frame which has a deployed state and an undeployed, flat state well suited to storage or shipping. A large, movable tab at the bottom of the frame is weakened by a series of small apertures and forms a hinge or fold line. Electrical accessories including a transformer, a rotary switch for selecting transformer taps and signal connections are included in an enclosed box mounted on the foldable tab. The flat panel masking loudspeaker is shipped flat in the undeployed state and then the large tab is deployed by being folded outwardly before installing the flat panel masking loudspeaker in a ceiling plenum. During installation, the tab is folded along the hinge or fold line out to approximately 90.degree. with respect to the rest of the masking speaker frame, the entire assembly is then held overhead by the installer and is positioned above the suspended ceiling T-bar supports, within the plenum, whereupon the assembly is lowered or pushed downwardly and is held in place by one or more spring clips gripping the speaker frame and the ceiling T-bar supports. Alternatively, the frame may be suspended within the plenum by one or more small chains from the building trusses. Speaker diaphragm panel materials are preferably limited to those that are light in weight, stiff and substantially fire proof, such as aluminum. The flat panel diaphragm is driven by one or more exciters to produce a substantially omnidirectional polar radiation pattern, evenly distributing masking sound through the plenum area for radiation down into a workspace.
