    • A shift control apparatus for a bicycle comprises an output transmission member that moves to at least a first output position and a second output position, a position maintaining mechanism, and a release control mechanism. The position maintaining mechanism includes a position maintaining member that moves between a position maintaining position and a position release position, wherein the position maintaining position maintains the output transmission member in one of the first output position and the second output position. The position release position allows the output transmission member to move toward the other one of the first output position and the second output position. The release control mechanism includes a release member that moves between a first release member position and a second release member position. The release control mechanism moves the position maintaining member to the position release position as the release member moves from the first release member position toward the second release member position and allows the position maintaining member to return to the position maintaining position before the release member begins moving back toward the first release member position, or as the release member continues to move toward the second release member position.

    • A power saving apparatus is provided for an assisting apparatus that uses power from a rotating member to assist the operation of a bicycle transmission. The power saving apparatus comprises a rotating member engaging member that moves between a rotating member engaging position and a rotating member disengaging position, a setting mechanism that sets the rotating member engaging member toward the rotating member engaging position, and a power saving unit. The power saving unit saves power communicated between the setting mechanism and the rotating member engaging member when the setting mechanism attempts to move the rotating member engaging member into the rotating member engaging position and the rotating member engaging member encounters a force that resists the rotating member engaging member being in the rotating member engaging position.

    • An internal hub transmission for a bicycle includes a hub axle for retaining the transmission to a bicycle frame, wherein the hub axle has an axle axis; a driver rotatably supported relative to the hub axle; an output member rotatably supported relative to the hub axle; and a planet gear mechanism. The planet gear mechanism includes a sun gear rotatably supported relative to the hub axle and movable in a direction of the axle axis; a planet gear carrier rotatably supported relative to the hub axle; a planet gear rotatably supported to the planet gear carrier, wherein the planet gear meshes with the sun gear; and a ring gear meshing with the planet gear. The sun gear moves in the direction of the axle axis between a first position, wherein the sun gear is nonrotatably coupled to a coupled member, and a second position, wherein the sun gear is decoupled from the coupled member. The coupled member is one of the hub axle, the driver, the planet gear carrier, and the output member. A stop member is disposed on one of the sun gear and the coupled member, and a complementary stop member disposed on the other one of the sun gear and the coupled member. At least one of the stop member and the complementary stop member includes a surface that pushes the sun gear away from the coupled member toward the second position.

The driver and the hub shell are rotatably supported relative to the hub axle. The power transmission mechanism is disposed between the driver and the hub shell to selectively transmit rotational power from the driver to the hub shell through one a plurality of power transmission paths. The shift mechanism operatively couples the power transmission mechanism to select a power transmission path. The downstream planetary gear unit includes a planetary gear carrier that meshes with planetary gears of the upstream planetary gear unit or with a linking member coupled to the planetary gears of the upstream planetary gear unit. The planetary gear carrier of the downstream planetary gear unit is coupled with a brake unit to transmit a reverse rotational power from the driver to the brake unit.
