    • A method is provided for producing an exhaust gas aftertreatment or acoustic device (20) having a maximum operating temperature TMAX. The method includes the steps of providing a blanket (40) of silica fiber or alumina insulation material having a weight percentage of SiO2 or Al2O3 of greater than 65%; calcining the insulating material by heating the blanket (40) so that all of silica fiber insulation material is raised to a temperature T greater than TMAX; and securing the blanket (40) on the device (20) after the calcining step. The blanket is encapsulated in a covering prior to the securing step, and before or after the calcining step, with the covering between the blanket and the device being a selected one of foil, wire mesh, or siliconized fiber glass.

    • A method is provided for installing a multi-layer mat (24) in an exhaust gas aftertreatment or acoustic device. The method includes the steps of wrapping the mat (24) around an inner surface of the device along the same plane for at least a complete wrap around the inner surface; subsequently wrapping the mat (24) around the already completed wrap such that each of the successive wraps of the mat (24) are offset a constant distance from the plane of the previous wrap; a final wrap of the mat (24) wherein the mat is wrapped along a final plane for at least a complete wrap around the catalyst; and installing the mat (24) in the device (18) after the wrapping steps.

    • A catalytic unit, a process for providing a support mat for the catalytic unit, and a process for assembling the catalytic unit are provided. An installed mat density for the support mat being calculated based upon a desired annular cross-sectional area of a gap between a catalyst carrier and a shell of the catalytic unit, with the support mat being sandwiched therebetween. The support mat for the catalytic unit can be provided by first slitting a bulk roll of support mat to form a plurality of end unit specific mat rolls. The support mat can be wrapped around the catalytic carrier to form multiple layers of support mat, with the support mat having beveled leading and trailing edges to reduce variation in material density in the layers of support mat overlying and underlying the leading trailing edges. The support mat can be free of any binder.

    • A method is provided for providing external insulation for an exhaust gas aftertreatment or acoustic device, including the steps of (a) securing an insulating blanket around the exterior of the device, (b) securing a sheet of foil around the insulating blanket, (c) interconnecting a plurality of wires into a sleeve oriented in an axial direction by knitting or interweaving, whereby extending the sleeve in the axial direction biases the sleeve radially inwardly, (d) positioning the wire sleeve around the foil sheet, (e) welding one end of the wire sleeve to the device adjacent one end of the insulating blanket, (f) pulling the other end of the sleeve in the axial direction to bias the sleeve radially inwardly sufficiently to apply a compressive force to the insulating blanket, and (g) welding the other end of the sleeve to the device adjacent the other end of the insulating blanket.
