    • A steam turbine includes a final turbine stage, a flow diffuser receiving a main flow from the final turbine stage, a diverging wall in the axial or radial flow diffuser that extends from a diffuser inlet to a diffuser exit, and a centerbody in the axial or radial flow diffuser. An opening is provided in the diverging wall and an opening is provided in the centerbody for fluidically actuating the main flow. The openings are located downstream from the diffuser inlet and upstream from a point where boundary layer separation would occur along the walls in a diffuser without the openings. A plurality of openings are provided in the diverging wall, and an end packing seal is positioned adjacent an end portion of the final turbine stage. An annular manifold collects fluid from leakage flow from the end packing seal and distributes the leakage flow to the openings.

    • A turbine exhaust diffuser includes a diffuser component disposed within the turbine exhaust diffuser and having an outer surface. Also included is a suction path extending between the outer surface and an interior compartment of the diffuser component, wherein the suction path is configured to ingest a fluid. Further included is an actuating path extending between the outer surface and the interior compartment of the diffuser component, wherein the actuating path is configured to expel the fluid. Yet further included is a flow manipulating device disposed within the interior compartment of the diffuser component.

    • A tip clearance control mechanism for a rotary machine adapted for reducing leakage flows, and minimizing tip vortex size and penetration into main flow that will improve turbine efficiency. The tip clearance control mechanism includes inventive arrangements of a rotating shroud and a shape of the shroud, teeth of various shapes and locations on the rotating shroud, and one or more stator teeth of various shapes and locations on a stationary shroud or casing wall configurations providing comparable tip clearance control. The reduction in leakage flow is a function of how these components are assembled together, which defines a clearance passage between the rotating shroud and the stationary shroud.
