    • A method involves: detecting a storage resource indication within a workflow request and, in response to the storage resource indication, generating an availability indication. The storage resource indication indicates a storage resource (e.g., by directly or indirectly identifying or selecting the storage resource). The availability indication indicates that the indicated storage resource is not available for subsequent workflow requests. The availability indication is generated prior to allowing the consumer that generated the workflow request to use the storage resource. The workflow request can include a request to allocate a logical storage structure (e.g., a volume or logical disk). The logical storage structure is allocated in response to the workflow request. If the workflow request is denied or expires, the logical storage structure is deleted.

    • After a first device (e.g., a host node in a shared data clustered system that stores a two-way mirrored volume) in a network creates or modifies a description of a layout for a data volume, the first device transmits separate copies of the data volume layout description to a pair of second devices, respectively, for storage in respective memories thereof. The first device may be a host node, and the pair of second devices may be first and second data storage systems. The first device and the pair of second devices are configured so that I/O transactions are transmitted between the first device and either of the pair of second devices. In other words, the first device is contained in a network layer that is different from the network layer that contains the pair of second devices.

    • In-band commands may be associated with a particular consistency interval and may indicate requested actions to be performed for that consistency interval. An application may desire to perform actions, such as additional backup, snapshots, etc. on stored data, when that data is in a consistent state from the application's point of view. In order to ensure that the data is in a consistent state, a consistency interval may be created on demand. A node may request a consistency interval by sending a consistency request message to a consistency interval coordinator, which in turn, establishes the consistency interval with all nodes in the distributed environment. After sending all write requests for the consistency interval, the node may then send the command message. Command messages may be stored in consistency logs along with write requests and a replication target, or other device, may read both the write requests and the command message.

    • A computer accessible medium comprises instructions which, when executed, receive a request to allocate one or more blocks for a file. At least one allocation policy is assigned to the file, wherein the allocation policy specifies one or more storage units on which the blocks are to be allocated. Additionally, if more than one storage unit is specified, the allocation policy includes a control indication indicating a mechanism for selecting among the storage units. The instructions, when executed, may also allocate blocks according to the allocation policy. In another implementation, a computer accessible medium comprises instructions which, when executed receive a request to allocate one or more blocks for a file in a filesystem and allocate blocks according to an allocation policy. Allocation policies are specifiable at two or more levels of granularity in the filesystem.
