    • A telephone circuit subset arrangement in which the base/emitter junction of a switching transistor (TR1) coupling an internal battery (B1) to the dialler chip's power terminals (VDD, VSS) is shunted by hook-switch signal contacts (HS) when the subset is brought into the off-hook mode, thereby turning the switching transistor off and disconnecting the battery. The circuit is so arranged that upon the switching transistor turning off, three auxiliary switching transistors (TR3, TR4 and TR5) turn on and operate the subset's line switch to connect line current to the dialler chip's power terminals. A network of resistors (R1, R2 and R3) associated with the switching transistor (TR1) ensure that on the one hand sufficient current is available to turn on the auxiliary switching transistors, and on the other hand limit the current to a magnitude which dose not cause excessive battery discharge while the subset is off-hook.

    • A line switch control circuit for a telephone subset comprising a line switch (2), a hook switch mode detector (TR4), a voltage sensing circuit (TR5) having at least two inputs (D and F), and a dialler chip (3) having a CMOS push-pull pulse output (DP). The circuit ensures that when the subset is in the on-hook mode, on the one hand, an appropriate level of current is drawn from the exchange line (L1, L2) to energise the dialler chip (3), and on the other hand, the line switch (2) remains non-conducting during on-hook mode.In the off-hook mode, the circuit renders the line switch non-conducting during breaks in dialling signals as well as during flashes by diverting current from the line switch into the pulse output (D) of the dialler chip.

    • A telephone circuit arrangement allows the use of a (high voltage) dialler chip (3) without a mode select output in a low voltage telephone. A filter (R1,C1) derives control signals from the DTMF output of the dialler chip. The control signals switch a control switch (TR1) connected to the Mode Select input (MS) of a transmission circuit (2) and the DTMF signals are applied to an input (T1) of transmission circuit (2). This enables the use of a dialler chip without a dedicated mode select output in a circuit which normally requires a dialler chip with a mode select output.

    • A telephone subset has a dial circuit (2) which can be powered from the exchange line (11, 12) via a regulated voltage terminal (VDD) of an associated transmission circuit (3) when the subset is OFF-HOOK and the line voltage is above a threshold voltage. When the subset is ON-HOOK, the dial circuit (2) is powered from a battery (B1) via a first switching circuit (TR2, TR3, R3). A hook-switch (HS) hold the first switching circuit OFF when the subset is OFF-HOOK to isolate the battery (B1) from line voltage. If the line voltage falls below the threshold when OFF-HOOK, a current sensing resistor (R4) switches a second switching circuit to connect the battery (B1) to the dial circuit (2) while the regulated voltage terminal presents a high impendance to isolate the battery from line voltage.

    • A battery-less telephone subset retains data in its processor memory with a storage capacitor which is kept charged by three controlled charge circuits which deliver power from the line to the capacitor under various line conditions and phone states. The first charge circuit charges the circuit initially, the second charge circuit then charges the capacitor (6.8 v) while all subsets remain on-hook (line voltage 50 v). When a second subset goes off-hook and the line voltage drops (to about 10 v), the capacitor is charged by the third charge circuit at a lower voltage (3.5 v) that is nevertheless sufficiently high to maintain the first subset's on-hook functions. Preferably, the third circuit is controlled by the subset's line switch control circuit, thereby minimizing the number of required components.
