    • An improved method of lifting a load includes supporting a load on a first section of an extendible lift assembly, the first section being surrounded by a second section, a hydraulic cylinder being operatively coupled to the first section so as to be capable of lifting the first section, and the first and second sections being supported on and vertically extendible with respect to a base. Then, while the load is supported on the first section, the hydraulic cylinder is extended to extend the first section relative to the second section and the base, thereby lifting the load to a first height. Then, the first section is secured to the second section so as to at least substantially prevent downward movement of the first section relative to the second section. The cylinder is then retracted and operatively coupled to the second section. Then, while the load is supported on the first section, the hydraulic cylinder is extended to extend the first and second sections relative to the base, thereby lifting the load to a second height which is higher than the first height. This procedure results in lifting the load through a range which is greater than a maximum range of extension of the hydraulic cylinder. The lift assembly also includes a locking device which, in the event of hydraulic pressure loss in the hydraulic cylinder, automatically mechanically engages one of the first and second sections to prevent unintended lowering of the load.

    • A transporter for raising, transporting and positioning ventilated nuclear waste storage casks includes a U-shaped platform that moves on a pair of independently controllable crawlers. A pair of lower lift beams, dimensioned to extend through the air channels of the cask, are slung below the platform. The rear ends of the lower lift beams can be raised and lowered by means of hydraulic cylinders carried on the platform. The forward ends of the lower lift beams can be raised and lowered by an upper lift beam that extends across the forward end of the platform between two vertically extendable columns. After the forward ends of the lower lift beams are inserted through the cask air channels, they are coupled to the upper lift beam by means of two lift pendants. A restraining strap encircles the cask and is tensioned by means of a hydraulic cylinder in order to keep the cask from swinging relative to the platform.

    • A gantry lift includes one or more pairs of vertically extendible lift columns and one or more horizontal lift beams supported across the upper ends of the lift columns. The lift beams are supported on header plates that permit slight pivoting or rocking motion between the lift beams and the lift columns. This helps counteract potentially destructive twisting or other forces that can result as the gantry operates and slight misalignments unavoidably occur. A half bearing between the header plate and the upper end of the lift column supports the weight of the lift beam and load and provides the desired pivoting action. The header plate and half bearing are secured to the top of the lift column by means of a full bearing positioned within the half bearing and secured to the lift column by a bolt or other fastener. Both the half bearing and the full bearing pivot around a common center. This method of securing the header plate permits the header plate to pivot freely over a desired range while resisting separating movement of the header plate relative to the lift column.

    • A mobile self-propelled aerial lift machine comprises a chassis, a swingable boom support structure mounted on the chassis, an elevatable telescopic boom mounted on the support structure and an adjustable work platform supported at the outer end of the boom. A plurality of hydraulic motors operable at variable speeds are provided to effect movement of the chassis, support structure, boom and work platform. The control system for the hydraulic motors includes an engine-driven destrokable radial piston-type pump mounted on the support structure and having a pressure port and a control (destroke) port whereby a change in the rate of fluid flow to the control (destroke) port effects a change in the fluid pressure at the pressure port. A plurality of solenoid operated selector valves are located on the support structure and are operable to permit fluid flow from the pressure port to the hydraulic motors. A control panel is located on the work platform and includes joystick-operated selector switches for operating the solenoids of the selector valves. A destroke conduit is provided for supplying fluid from the pressure port to the control (destroke) port and extends along the boom to the work platform. A pedal operated modulatable flow control valve is located on the work platform and connected to the destroke conduit for controlling fluid flow to the control (destroke) port to thereby control the speed of a hydraulic motor when the selector valve therefor is operated.

    • A extendible boom incorporates a locking mechanism that mechanically engages an extended boom section in response to the loss of hydraulic fluid pressure to the lift cylinder for that boom section so as to prevent unintended boom lowering. The locking mechanism includes locking devices, such as toothed cams, that are located on opposite sides of the boom and that are configured to move, 1) from a disengaged position permitting unobstructed movement of the extended section relative to the adjacent section, 2) to an engaged position in which the locking devices engage opposite sides of the extended section to prevent unintended boom lowering. In order to prevent the imposition of unequal locking forces that could occur if only the locking device on one side of the extended boom section were to engage that section, an equalizer arrangement mechanically couples the locking devices on opposite sides of the extended boom section to one another so that both locking devices always move through essentially the same stroke at essentially the same time. The equalizer arrangement preferably comprises an equalizer bar that mechanically couples pivot shafts of the two locking devices together so that rotation of one pivot shaft drives the other pivot shaft to simultaneously rotate through a pivot stroke that at least substantially equals a pivot stroke of the one shaft.

The springs resist larger deviations, thereby increasing the structural integrity and safety of the apparatus and method. The method stabilizes the gantry by providing a progressively increasing restoring force as the boom and beam travel farther from a starting position corresponding to a perpendicular relationship between the boom and the beam.
