    • A guard for a universal joint of the type having a yoke pivotally connected by a cross-link to a housing is disclosed. The guard includes a bell element which has a hemispherically shaped outer surface and is mounted coaxially with the yoke. A boot having first and second end portions and a central portion surrounds the housing with the first end portion having a hemispherically shaped inner surface which mates in sliding contact with the hemispherically shaped surface of the bell element. A bearing surface is within the central portion of the boot and the second end portion is opposite from the first end portion. The bearing surface within the central portion is in sliding contact with a spherical surface which is provided on the housing. As the yoke is articulated relative to the housing, the bearing surface slides along the housing spherical surface to allow the boot to tilt relative to the housing.

    • A shield for a universal joint having two yokes is disclosed. Each one of a pair of opposed bell elements is journaled upon the yokes and has a hemispherically shaped outer surface. Each one of a pair of frusto-spherically shaped shoes slidably overlaps one of the bell elements so that the shoes are restrained against axial movement but can rotate relative to the bell elements. A boot spans the shoes with each shoe rotatably disposed between its associated bell element and the boot. The shoes float upon the bell elements within the boot to fully enclose the universal joint as the joint is articulated. The small range of motion of the shield makes it especially suited to operate at wide angles in compact spaces.

    • A constant velocity universal joint of the type including a pair of outer yokes pivotally connected to a double inner housing and a centering apparatus positioned between the outer yokes is disclosed. The centering apparatus has a centering plate which is restrained axially but free to move radially between the outer yokes. A pin extends from each side of the centering plate and journals a pair of sliders, one on each side of the plate. A cavity is defined at the end of each outer yoke to receive the adjacent slider. Mating spherical surfaces on each slider and in each cavity provide sliding surface contact between the cavity surfaces and the sliders. This arrangement results in a compact constant velocity universal joint with surface contact throughout the centering apparatus. In an especially useful embodiment, a grease reservoir is formed in the double inner housing and grease passageways are formed in the centering plate and pin to provide a dynamic lubrication system throughout the centering apparatus.

    • A lubrication passageway for a universal joint which has a pair of yokes. The yokes are pivotally connected to one another and each has an axis of rotation. An annular groove is formed in an arm of one of the yokes in a plane which is spaced apart from the axis of rotation of the yoke and perpendicular to an imaginary line which is normal to the axis. A first passageway provides lubricant to the side of the groove which is distal from the centering apparatus. A second passageway provides lubricant from the side of the groove proximate to the centering apparatus to the centering apparatus. The annular groove acts as a check valve to prevent lubricant from flowing out of the centering apparatus when the joint is rotating. A sustem for lubricating a centering plate and bearings for the universal joint is also disclosed.

    • A differential including a driven carrier which rotatably receives a pair of spaced bevel gears secured to axially aligned shafts concentric with the axis of rotation of the carrier. A pair of diametrically opposed slots are formed in the inner surface of the carrier and extend parallel to the carrier axis. A two-piece floating pinion pin having pinions journaled thereon includes generally rectangular feet on opposite ends thereof slidably received in the slots and defining flats that are longer than the pin diameter and which slidably engage the sides of the slots thereby preventing rotation of the pin relative to the carrier while allowing the axis of each pinion to shift longitudinally of the slot to maintain the axis of each pinion centered between the engaged portions of the bevel gears. Full bearing engagement of the flats with the sides of the slots is assured during normal operation by a spring which urges the feet of the pinion pin fully into their associated slots thereby compensating for tolerance build up axially of the pinion pin, and by the longer length of the flats which compensates for tolerance buildups transversely of the pinion pin.
