    • A diffusive tip assembly for controlling a light intensity profile during a medical procedure is provided. The diffusive tip assembly includes an optical fiber including a core and a diffuser tip that surrounds a distal end of the core. The diffuser tip includes multiple light directing features that are shaped and arranged in a pattern along an axial length of the diffuser tip. The light directing features are capable of directing light traveling from the core in a radial direction toward an outer surface of the diffuser tip for irradiating a material in proximity of the diffuser tip. An optical coupling material is disposed between the core and the diffuser tip. The optical coupling material and surfaces of the light directing features form boundaries upon which light rays traveling from the core are incident. The pattern of light directing features has a proximal portion, a central portion and a distal portion where a dimensional property of light directing features located at the proximal and distal regions is different than the dimensional property of light directing features located at the central region. The dimensional property is selected to provide a flattened light intensity profile during use.

    • The disclosed embodiments relate to a power-supply circuit, an electronic device that includes the power-supply circuit, and a method for generating high-voltage DC power from AC line power using the power-supply circuit. This power-supply circuit includes a voltage multiplier and a low dropout (LDO) regulator, and does not include a step-up transformer. Conventional power supplies often use a custom step-up transformer, which is expensive unless the power supplies are manufactured in high quantities. In contrast, one embodiment of the present disclosure provides a solid-state implementation of a 700 V regulated power supply that can take up to a 1020 V input from an 6× voltage multiplier powered from the AC mains. Hence, the disclosed power-supply circuit eliminates the need for large, heavy and expensive step-up transformers and chokes that are used in conventional high-voltage DC power supplies.

    • A method and apparatus for providing a LED backlight to a LCD display screen is disclosed.     • The disclosed embodiments relate to a power supply for a portable electronic device. This power supply includes a power source, an inductor, a control circuit, and an input switch that couples the input terminal of the inductor to either the power source or a reference voltage. The power supply also includes a first output path that produces a first output voltage and a second output path that produces a second output voltage. The first output path includes a first diode coupled between the output terminal of the inductor and the first output voltage, and a first output capacitor coupled between the first output voltage and the reference voltage. The second output path includes a second diode and an output switch coupled between the output terminal and the second output voltage, and a second output capacitor coupled between the second output voltage and the reference voltage.

    • A method and apparatus for device discovery and multi-mode security in a wired and/or wireless control network are described. A controlled device is configured with discovery-level instructions and application-level control instructions. The controlled device includes a user-configurable parameter for selecting between multiple security modes. In one or more security modes, the controlled device may ignore application-level messages until encrypted communications are established with a controller. In one mode, the encrypted communication is established with an encryption key exchange using a predetermined security key. In another mode, a specific key is manually entered into the controller by the user/administrator to facilitate the encryption key exchange. Additionally, for control applications where security is not important, an unencrypted security mode may be implemented. A driver ID provided by the controlled device facilitates loading of a preferred device driver by the controller.
