    • An autologous blood transfusion system having at least two interconnected blood receptacles and an associated filter assembly, the first receptacle being evacuated and connected to a suction device for aspirating blood. The second receptacle takes blood from the first by overcoming the vacuum in the first with a greater vacuum in the second without interrupting the ability of the suction device to simultaneously aspirate blood. The second receptacle may comprise a transfer bag for reinfusion into the patient or an infusion set may be connected to the second receptacle to permit simultaneous collection of the blood from the patient and infusion of the blood back into the patient. In either case, the second receptacle is selectively exposed to positive pressure to force blood through the filter assembly and expel the blood from the second receptacle into the transfer bag or patient. The method includes aspirating blood from the patient and collecting blood in the first receptacle. Blood is thereafter transferred to the second receptacle by increasing the vacuum in the second receptacle over the first receptacle without interrupting the ability of the suction device to simultaneously aspirate blood. Blood is then filtered by subjecting the blood within the second receptacle to positive fluid pressure which urges the blood through the filter assembly.

    • Needle restraining apparatus is provided which serves to prevent a stylet needle of a venipuncture device which fits telescopically within a catheter of the venipuncture device from longitudinally moving with respect to the catheter during venipuncture. In one embodiment, the needle restraining apparatus provides a collar constructed of heat-shrinkable plastic releasably conforming to a needle hub and the hub of a tube adaptor of the venipuncture device. The collar is shrunk so that the leading and trailing ends of the collar form a non-slip fit over the irregular contour of the hub of the tube adaptor and the hub of the stylet needle. In a second embodiment of the invention, the collar is constructed of rigid plastic and preformed to engage the hub of the tube adaptor of the device and the hub of the stylet needle thereby preventing longitudinal movement of the stylet needle relative to the catheter. Structure is provided whereby the collar can be easily released to permit removal of the stylet needle from the venipuncture device after a venipuncture has been made.

    • The invention comprises a handpiece for use in a surgical procedure which involves directing a surgical agent to a target area of a person's body which procedure produces an unwanted smoke plume. The handpiece includes both a probe for directing a surgical agent, such as a CO.sub.2 laser beam, and a smoke eliminator for removing with suction the smoke created by the surgical procedure. The probe has no functional components for creating the laser beam, and is thus economical enough to be disposable after one use. The smoke eliminator includes a nozzle and/or an offset suction port so configured as to create a votrex flow in the smoke in the target area upstream in the fluid flow pathway of smoke through the hand piece from the distal tip of the hand piece.

    • A glucose sensor assembly useful in patient systems includes an oxygen sensor from which glucose levels in the vicinity of the peritoneal cavity may be inferred. The sensor assembly may be associated with electronics, such as any or all of a DC power supply, an LED source of blue light, a photoreceptor for red light, a CPU, and transceiver, by a direct percutaneous connection. Alternatively they may be associated transdermally with the sensor and some of the electronics being located subdurally. Insulin infusion means are contemplated to respond manually or mechanically to information from the sensors through the CPU. Mechanical response may be automatic. Infusion means may be located subdurally. It is contemplated that the present invention enable revitalization or replacement of fluorescing compounds and glucose oxidase within the sensor assembly.
