    • A stable and flexible synchronization system and method are disclosed. The method includes selecting to receive an external clock signal, detecting a difference between an internal clock signal and the selected external clock signal and generating a control signal representing the difference; determining if the control signal has a first value that is within a predetermined range; calculating a second value representing an absolute value of a difference between a current value of the control signal and a previous value of the control signal; determining if the value is less than a third value; resetting the output signal upon receipt of an edge of said selected external clock signal; determining if a timing difference between the output signal and the selected clock signal is substantially zero; and issuing a signal indicative of synchronization.

    • An intelligent medical vigilance system that observes and analyzes, and, only in the event of a clinically significant negative condition, notifies and reports the event to the care staff utilizing the hospital's existing nurse call system. The device includes a bedside unit connected to a pad or coverlet with a sensor array (placed under the patient) and also to an existing hospital nurse call system via an interface. Within the physical bedside unit are a signal processor and an alarm processor that measure data and evaluate whether a clinically significant event is occurring. The bedside unit is a wall-mounted unit with a display that becomes active when an alarm condition is enabled. The sensing pad or coverlet is a thin, piezoelectric film, or other similar sensing technology, with an array of sensors sheathed in soft padding and is not directly in contact with the skin of the patient. The nurse call feature is made up of hardware, software and cabling to connect to the nurse call system already installed in the hospital or care facility. The monitoring system can also be installed in vehicles to monitor operator physiological conditions.

    • A digital surround sound decoder. The decoder uses an architecture including two signal processing chips to achieve a program that can decode audio data at sufficiently high resolution. The decoder performs in real time and is compatible with standard surround sound formats. The decoder includes software that utilizes table lookups for critical functions in the decoding process. The processing flow of the decoder's program takes advantage of the multi-function capability within the specific processors used in the design while using a minimum number of program instructions. The program implements band pass filtering, sum-difference calculations, fast-attack slow-decay integration, summation and reciprocal processing, determination of fast and slow modes, look-up table indexing, adaptive matrix processing and various other functions to generate decoded surround sound signals from encoded left and right signal inputs.

    • The system and method of the present invention provides surround sound effects through a two channel system. In one embodiment, the first channel is connected to one speaker (e.g., the right speaker) of a headset and the second channel is connected to the other speaker (e.g., the left speaker) of the headset. Thus, surround sound effects, including providing effects to distinguish front and rear sound sources, are provided through headsets which isolate the sound provided to right ear and the left ear of the listener. Alternately, the signals are output to a two speaker system, enabling surround sound effects to be output through home stereo systems not necessarily configured specifically for surround sound. Modified head related transfer functions (HRTF) are applied to each rear sound signal. The modified HRTF for each rear signal is generated by removing the head related transfer function corresponding to the front center signal from the HRTF corresponding to the rear sound signal. This provides the audible effect of distinguishing more clearly sounds originating in front of the listener or to the rear of the listener while not limiting the perceived bandwidth of the signal.

    • A system for providing audible cues that enable a listener to identify locations of origins of sounds. In one embodiment, a front and rear signal are copies of an input signal. The rear signal is modified by application of a modified head related transfer function which is the difference between the front and rear head related transfer functions. Copies are then made of the front signal and the modified rear signal, one copy of each associated with a first channel and one copy of each associated with a second channel. Front/rear cues are applied by delaying one of the rear signals or inverting the phase of one of the rear signals. Volume levels are then modified according to the location of the sound source. Locations of sound sources, including sources location behind the user are therefore audibly distinguished. Thus, in an interactive environment, such as a video game environment, the sounds generated by moving objects can be readily modified by simply modifying the volume levels.
