Transverse ribs (28) are formed on the body (12) for abutment with the top surface (56) of the connector (50). Therefore, the connector (50) can be reliably and efficiently retained by the holding device (10) for moving to the specific predetermined position on the PC board through a suction nozzle of a robot arm.

    • A connector apparatus for electrically connecting printed circuit boards together includes a male and a female connector. The male connector includes a connector body (1). The body (1) has a central connecting block (11) on the bottom. The external surface of the bottom of the body provides a number of contact terminal holes (15). A number of double-L-shaped contact terminals (2) each having a bent contact portion (23) is installed inside a corresponding one of the contact terminal containing spaces (16). The soldering end (22) extends out of the corresponding one of the contact terminal holes (15) in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body. The female connector includes a connector body (3) with a number of parallel contact terminal containing spaces (32) extending in a direction perpendicular both to the longitudinal axis and the bottom of the body. The external surface of the bottom has a number of contact terminal holes (35) each connected to and aligned with a corresponding one of the contact terminal containing spaces (32). A number of L-shaped contact terminals (4) each having a slightly inclined contact receiving end is installed inside a corresponding one of the contact terminal containing spaces (32). One-way latching protrusions (41) are formed on the center section of the contact terminal (4) for latching into the stopping planes. A soldering end (42) extends out of the corresponding one of the contact terminal holes in a direction substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body (3).

    • A plug connector (10) includes an insulative elongated housing (12) defining an elongated cavity (14) therein along the lengthwise direction. The depth of the cavity (14) is relatively smaller than the full dimension of the height of the housing (12). The housing (12) defines a plurality of passageways (18) extending along the height direction and the front end portion of each passageway (18) inwardly communicates with the cavity (14). Oppositely, the remaining most lower portion of each passageway (18) is exposed to an exterior laterally. Thus, a plurality of elongated contacts (24) are adapted to be insertably received within the corresponding passageways (18), respectively, wherein the front portion (36) of each contact (24) is inwardly exposed to the cavity (14) and the remaining portion (26) of the contact (24) is outwardly exposed to an exterior on two sides of the housing (12). A plurality of raised ribs (60) are disposed on two side surfaces (42) of the housing (12) for providing additional support against a shield plate (40). Two pairs of barbs (30, 32) are provided adjacent two opposite ends of each contact (24) wherein the front barbs (32) provide not only alignment but also retention, and the rear barbs (30) provide not only resistance to vibration occurring thereabout, but also preferred engagement with the shield plate for some specific grounding contact (24).

Additionally, the engaging body (52) of the contact (48) of the socket connector (12) is substantially positioned beyond the partition rib (46), and thus the barbs (54) formed on two sides of the engaging body (52) each has a coined portion so that such barb (54) can be substantially completely embedded within the corresponding passage (42) defined between two adjacent ribs (46) for reinforcing the retention function with regard to the housing (36) for preventing contact (48) of the socket connector (12) from deforming or tilting during mating.
