    • An apparatus for deactivating a resonant circuit without physically contacting the resonant circuit. The EAS system includes a numerically controlled oscillator for generating an alternating electric signal, the frequency of the alternating electric signal varying in accordance with a numerical frequency control signal; a clock having a substantially fixed frequency connected to the numerically controlled oscillator; and a transmitting antenna connected to the numerically controlled oscillator for establishing an electromagnetic field within a deactivation zone. The frequency of the alternating electric signal is restricted to being an integer multiple of an integer sub-multiple of the clock frequency.

    • In one embodiment, the present invention is a computer-implemented system for designing software-based components for systems of systems including multiple software-based components saved in a relational database where the functions of each software component are defined by one or more examples of its operation using a natural language. Each software component is assigned a searchable, unique free-text field such that each of the components have multiple indexed levels in a literal restriction path. The system further includes means for retrieval, synthesis, substitution, reuse and modification of the components at every level of the multiple levels, including means for defining a new software component.

    • The underlying objective of this invention is to show how fuzzy sets (and information granules in general) and grammatical inference play an interdependent role in information granularization and knowledge-based problem characterization. The bottom-up organization of the material starts with a concept and selected techniques of data compactification which involves information granulation and gives rise to higher order constructs (type-2 fuzzy sets). The detailed algorithmic investigations are provided. In the sequel, we focus on Computing with Words (CW), which in this context is treated as a general paradigm of processing information granules. We elaborate on a role of randomization and offer a detailed example illustrating the essence of the granular constructs along with the grammatical aspects of the processing.

    • In one embodiment, the present invention is a retrofit to rapidly transition to existing consumer refrigerator-freezer product lines in order to greatly eliminate wasted energy. This occurs because spurious opening of the system doors allows heat to enter with the deleterious side effect of causing the compressor to cycle on and off. This, in turn, consumes more power than if such duty cycles could be predicted, which would allow for their smoothing. The invention takes advantage of existing sensor technologies and develops a computational framework for their fusion for the prediction of a dependency, which controls operation of the compressor. Instances of a predictive schema are evolved and this approach allows for greater accuracy in less time than would be possible using competing neural network or support vector machine technologies. A novel evolutionary algorithm is included, which is so defined as to allow its execution on a lower-end computer.
