    • Methods of providing page protection in digital printing systems having multiple output devices are described. In one embodiment, first and second output devices are provided and have different time constraints for processing predetermined amounts of data which will ultimately be printed on a print medium. One of the time constraints is selected to provide a selected time constraint, and at least one predetermined amount of data is tested against the selected time constraint to determine whether the selected time constraint is satisfied. If the selected time constraint is not satisfied, the predetermined amount of data is transformed into a state which is more likely to satisfy the selected time constraint. In another embodiment, a first processing time constraint of a first output device is determined. The first processing time constraint impacts the manner in which a predetermined amount of data is processed into a printed image. A second processing time constraint of a second output device is determined. The second processing time constraint impacts the manner in which the predetermined amount of data is processed into a printed image. The first and second processing time constraints are compared and responsive to the comparison, the processing time constraint having a lesser magnitude is selected to provide a selected processing time constraint.

    • A method for establishing two-way communications between a host system and a device when the address of the device is initially unknown. The host system submits a job to a device with the job including address and other information required for the device to respond with the device's address. Once the host system has the device address, the host system and the device can establish bi-directional communications. In a print job, a print job language (PJL) command known as SOCKETPING is used to transmit the information between a print client and a printer. The SOCKETPING command includes fields for host system address family, protocol, address, and port as well as extensions to define job status reporting parameters. The printer responds to the SOCKETPING command with the necessary address information for the printer and job status reports as specified in the SOCKETPING extensions.

    • A coordinating push and user-initiated synchronization method and system. Initially, changes to a local application data store are detected and records affected by the change are identified. At some point, a record affected by a detected change is pushed to a remote system where it is ascertained whether the pushed record, in its current form as affected by the detected change, has already been replicated in or deleted from a remote application data store through user-initiated synchronization. If not, the pushed record is used to update the remote application data store. Instead, at some point it may be ascertained whether the identified record, in its current form as affected by the detected change, has been replicated in or deleted from the remote application data store through push synchronization as just described. If not, the remote application data store is synchronized with the local application data store.
