    • A microscope body has coupled thereto a lens with the axis of said lens relatively transverse to the optical axis of said microscope. A mirror is positioned with respect to said lens to deflect any light propagating through said lens relatively parallel to the optical axis of said microscope and through the objective lens of said scope to the object plane; and a fiber optic cable is directed at one end to propagate light from a remote source through said lens and thence, to said mirror. Means are provided to prevent spurious light or reflections from the surface of the objective lens from appearing at the visual plane of said microscope.

    • An optical connector for connecting an optical cable having a cylindrical endpiece to a light source has a structure having an interior bore with a longitudinal axis, a port for receiving an illuminating beam and another port for receiving the cylindrical endpiece. A channel is defined along the periphery of the bore in the structure. A generally circular shaped spring member is positioned in the channel. The inner diameter of the circular shape is slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the cylindrical endpiece, which allows the establishment of a secure, yet releasable, connection between the cylindrical endpiece and the spring member. If the person wearing the headset connected to the optical cable moves too far, the optical cable is released from the housing.

    • A light tip has a bundle of optical fibers extending from a proximal light-transmitting aperture to a distal light-transmitting aperture and an opaque sleeve about the bundle. The proximal light transmitting aperture has a first cross-sectional shape and the distal light transmitting aperture has a second cross-sectional shape. At least some of the optical fibers in the bundle taper from a relatively larger diameter at the proximal aperture to a relatively smaller diameter at the distal aperture. The surface area of the proximal aperture is greater than the surface area of the distal aperture. The cross-sectional shape of the light tip smoothly and continuously changes from the first cross-sectional shape to the second cross-sectional shape through at least a first portion of the light tip. The light tip has a curved section intermediate the proximal and distal apertures.
