    • The environment surrounding an end-user device is analyzed. When a user of the device requests a download of a media presentation, the device uses the results of the environmental analysis to automatically request an alternative audio or video track for the media presentation. By choosing a better alternative before the download even begins, the device avoids user frustration and conserves resources. For example, a user requests a music video to be played on his mobile phone. By using its microphone, the phone analyzes its current audio environment and concludes that there is considerable background noise. Then when requesting a download of the music video, the phone requests an “enhanced-clarity” soundtrack to increase the odds that its user will be able to hear the music over the background noise. In some situations, the alternative track is rendered in addition to, rather than instead of, the default tracks of the media presentation.

    • A quality dispatch service on a CDMA based wireless system. To achieve spectral efficiency and fast access for follow-up calls, in response to a request by a talkgroup member to have a group call established, the non-requesting (listening-only) members are allowed to establish a low-rate (non-voice) signaling link in the reverse direction (inbound) for the limited purpose of (i) providing forward power control information to the fixed infrastructure; (ii) requesting soft hand-off when required; and (iii) maintaining the correct reverse link power control to allow for fast channel access for a follow-on call. In accordance with the illustrative embodiment, the establishment of multiple inbound signaling links in a CDMA dispatch call occurs as a background process while beginning the voice communications immediately.

    • Uplink time slots (108) may be allocated within a communication system (100) when a communication unit (102) transmits a first packet (501) to a time slot allocator (101). Upon receiving the first packet (501), the time slot allocator (101) determines whether the first packet (501) contains a request for allocation of N uplink time slots. When the first packet (501) contains the request for allocation of N uplink time slots, the time slot allocator (101) allocates the N uplink time slots to the communication unit (102) when the N uplink time slots are available, wherein the N uplink time slots are allocated contiguous in time. The time slot allocator (101) then transmits an allocation indication to the communication unit in each of N downlink time slots (110) corresponding to the N allocated uplink time slots (108) to inform the communication unit (102) of the allocation.

In accordance with the illustrative embodiment, the establishment of low-rate inbound signaling links occurs prior to beginning the voice communications. Because a low-rate signaling link, as contemplated by the present invention, is a non-voice link which signals at a predetermined rate substantially less than that of a full-rate traffic link, proportionately less average power is required for dispatch communications than would otherwise be the case if full-rate traffic links were provided instead to non-talking talkgroup members. The present solution results in less interference to the CDMA system and thus substantially less impact on overall system capacity.
