    • A copy system includes a duplicator and a sorter which has a plurality of multi-bin towers.Duplicator and sorter controls are provided for controlling the duplicator and tower transport devices and bin deflectors in the collated simplex mode. The size of each segment of an entered job is computed by the duplicator control as a function of available sorting means resources.The duplicator control detects a single tower loading or multiple tower loading selection for limitless mode operation, and shuts down the duplicator and sorter after the completion of each job segment in the multiple tower loading mode, or after the completion of each job segment in the single tower loading mode if an empty tower is unavailable. The duplicator control restarts the duplicator and sorter in the single tower loading mode when an empty tower becomes available with the next segment size set to the number of bins in the empty tower and the destination of copies in the next job segment set to the empty tower, or in the multiple tower loading mode when the number of towers required for the next job segment are emptied and available with the start destination of copies in the next job segment set to the next previous start tower.

    • A copy system has a duplicator and a large capacity sorter. The duplicator has a limited capacity duplex tray that supports copy processing in the duplex mode. The sorter has up to 10 towers with 60 bins provided in each tower. The maximum bin capacity is 100 sheets, so that the system can handle up to 60,000 copies. Horizontal and vertical transports are provided for each tower and a bin deflector is provided for each bin. Each tower has a local control that is directed by a centralized sorter control. A duplicator control is provided for running the copy process in the duplicator and for directing the sorter control to achieve coordinated operation of the duplicator and sorter. In the uncollated, duplex mode, duplex copies are produced in segment sizes up to the duplex tray capacity limit. Copies of each original in successive copy segments are delivered to consecutive bins in a common bin area in a pair of the towers thereby forming a readily identified copy stack for that stack in the common bin area. Successive copy segments are delivered to consecutive common bin areas.

    • A reproduction machine for making copies from original documents includes a diagnostic system for examining the operation of the transport devices moving paper sheets through the paper path. Paper path sensors are located along the paper paths for sensing the passage of paper sheets as they are moved therethrough. A device clock generates information regarding the times of sheet passage past sensors. Data representative of machine operating time and corresponding to paper sheet passage past the sensors is stored in an addressable memory for a number of paper sheet passages. Upon indication of a fault condition, such as a paper jam, the data stored in the addressable memory is moved to a non-volatile memory. A device control and display are provided to access and manipulate the stored data.

    • To enable running in a multiple document load mode, an interface procedure is used to specify more than one bin in a "bins for each set" selection and the desired bin capacity is set in the Bin Capacity selection. From 1 to 6 bins per set may be selected. The operator selects the copy quantity, places the first set of originals in the document handler and presses start print. During this job segment, if the number of copies delivered is equal to the bin capacity, then the sorters will automatically increment to the next bin. Incrementing to the next bin is only dependent on reaching bin capacity and is not related to the loads in the document handler. When copying of the first set of originals is complete, the screen reads: "LOAD MORE ORIGINALS AND PRESS START PRINT OR PRESS END JOB IF JOB DONE". The operator then loads the next set of originals and presses start print. This sequence continues until the last sets of originals is completed, the operator then presses "END JOB". The job is now complete with each output set occupying a group of consecutive bins. The number of bins per group is determined by the value set in "bins for each set".
