    • A speech recognition system recognizes a caller identifier received during a telephone call as a speech signal from a caller. The system generates a plurality of caller identifier choices from the speech signal and receives location information of the caller. The system includes a database on which is stored a plurality of caller identifiers indexed to a plurality of location information. The system queries a database based on the received location information and retrieves one or more caller identifiers from the database. The system then selects the recognized caller identifier from the plurality of caller identifier choices based on the retrieved one or more caller identifiers.

    • The present invention relates to a system and method for automatically verifying that a message received from a user is intelligible. In an exemplary embodiment, a message is received from the user. A speech level of the user's message may be measured and compared to a pre-determined speech level threshold to determine whether the measured speech level is below the pre-determined speech level threshold. A signal-to-noise ratio of the user's message may be measured and compared to a pre-determined signal-to-noise ratio threshold to determine whether the measured signal-to-noise ratio of the message is below the pre-determined signal-to-noise ratio threshold. An estimate of intelligibility for the user's message may be calculated and compared to an intelligibility threshold to determine whether the calculated estimate of intelligibility is below the intelligibility threshold. If any of the measured speech level, measured signal-to-noise ratio and calculated estimate of intelligibility of the user's message are determined to be below their respective thresholds, the user may be prompted to repeat at least a portion of the message.

    • A method and apparatus create a dynamic grammar pertaining to a current user from a global database of data items. A user first identifies himself to the system using a predetermined input identifier, such as an account number, for example. On the basis of this input identifier, the system of the present invention extracts from a global customer database those data items that are associated with the input identifier of the customer. A dynamic grammar including these extracted data items is created, and the system performs a search for a particular data item within this dynamic grammar on the basis of further search criteria that are provided by the customer.

    • A speech recognition system recognizes a telephone call parameter dependent word received during a telephone call. The recognition system extracts a telephone call parameter (e.g., the telephone number from where the telephone call originated, the time of day, etc.) from the telephone call and generates a probable word set from the telephone call parameter. The probable word set includes at least one telephone call parameter dependent word. Further, the recognition system receives a speech signal and generates one or more of word choices from the speech signal. The recognition system then selects, based on the probable word set, one of the generated word choices as the recognized telephone call parameter dependent word.

    • A method and apparatus for recognizing an input identifier entered by a user. A caller enters a predetermined identifier through a voice input device. A signal representing the entered identifier is transmitted to a remote recognizer, which responds to the identifier signal by producing a recognized output intended to match the entered identifier. The present invention then generates a set of option identifiers, each option identifier having a possibility of matching the input identifier. The set of option identifiers is then reduced to a set of candidate identifiers by eliminating those option identifiers that are not found among a set of stored reference identifiers. The present invention selects a match for the input identifier from the set of candidate identifiers.

    • A method and apparatus for recognizing an identifier entered by a user. A caller enters a predetermined identifier through a voice input device or a touch-tone keypad of a telephone handset. A signal representing the entered identifier is transmitted to a remote recognizer, which responds to the identifier signal by producing a recognized output intended to match the entered identifier. The present invention compares this recognized identifier with a list of valid reference identifiers to determine which one of these reference identifiers most likely matches the entered identifier. In performing this determination, the present invention employs a confusion matrix, which is an arrangement of probabilities that indicate the likelihood that a given character in a particular character position of the reference identifier would be recognized by the recognizer as a character in the corresponding character position of the recognized identifier. This determination yields an identifier recognition probability for every reference identifier, and the present invention selects the reference identifier with the highest identifier recognition probability as most likely corresponding to the entered identifier.

    • A vocoder according to the present invention includes an analyzer portion and a synthesizer portion. The analyzer portion encodes an input frame of speech on the basis of a candidate excitation selected from a group of candidate excitations stored in memory. Instead of transmitting the actual candidate excitation to the synthesizer portion, the analyzer portion generates and provides to the synthesizer portion a variable length index code that identifies the selected candidate excitation. The synthesizer portion stores in memory the same plurality of candidate excitations as the analyzer portion. The synthesizer portion uses the variable length index code to obtain from its memory the candidate excitation originally selected by the analyzer portion. The synthesizer portion reconstructs the input frame of speech on the basis of the obtained candidate excitation.
