    • A stackable linear actuator using flat, planar carriages. Each carriage is formed of two thin fiber reinforced outer surfaces having a low density composite core between each of the outer surfaces. A flat single layer coil is mounted within the composite core. The carriages are mounted for relative movement in a vertical stack. Between each carriage is a set of permanent magnets of opposing polarity. The sets of magnets are aligned so that magnets of similar polarity are aligned vertically. A steel plate is attached at the top of the stack. Another steel plate is attached to the bottom of the stack. These plates shunt the magnetic flux to form a continuous loop of magnetic flux through the entire stack. The carriages are operated by supplying the coils with current of varying intensity and polarity.

    • A tape drive having a magnetic head cleaning apparatus comprising a frame, a read and write magnetic head attached to the frame, a flexure supported by the frame for relative movement between the frame and the read and write magnetic head, and a brush attached to the flexure for cleaning debris off the magnetic head. The read and write magnetic head attached to the frame is configured for reading and writing data to and from a storage medium. The flexure having the brush attached thereon moves upwardly and downwardly with respect to the frame and the read and write magnetic head to clean the magnetic head. The flexure biases the brush toward the read and write magnetic head to insure proper brush contact with the magnetic head. The tailorable compliance of the magnetic head cleaning apparatus increases the cleaning effectiveness and prolongs the life of the brush.

    • The azimuth angle between a tape head and magnetic tape accessed by the tape head must be properly set in high areal information density magnetic tape drives. A frame for setting the azimuth angle includes a first portion rigidly attached to a base. The head is mounted in a carriage held by a second frame portion permitting the carriage to move in a transverse direction across the tape width. Flexures join the first and second frame portions and permit the second frame portion to be rotated a frame angle relative to the first frame portion. Each flexure is positioned such that, when the frame angle is at a preset value, the flexure is radially aligned with the azimuth axis. A drive is set between the frame first and second portions. The drive rotates the second portion relative to the first portion by deflecting the flexures, thereby changing the azimuth angle.

First and second pairs of parallel flexible rolling tubes are positioned between the base and driver, and the two pairs are disposed orthogonally with respect to each other. In this configuration, the driver is movable axially and angularly with respect to the base by compression and expansion of the flexible tubes. The driver is movable radially with respect to the drive axis by rolling of at least one of the pairs of tubes. The driver is relatively torsionally rigid with respect to the base to facilitate rotational driving engagement of the cassette reel when there exists axial, radial or angular misalignment between the driver and cassette reel.

    • A rolling flexure bearing. The bearing is formed of a thin sheet of elastic material that is attached to a surface of a first object. The sheet extends a short distance along the surface of the first object. The sheet then makes a 180 degree elastic bend off the surface of the first object to reverse the direction of the sheet. After making the bend, the sheet then extends a short distance along the surface of the second object substantially parallel to the surface of the first object. The sheet is attached at its end to the surface of the second object.In this configuration, the flexure bearing is stiff along an axis parallel to the bend axis to constrain movement along this axis. The flexure bearing, along the axis normal to the surfaces of the objects, has a high compliance rate to provide damping between the objects. Along the third orthogonal axis, normal to the bend axis, the bearing allows free relative movement between the two objects, until it approaches either of the two attachment areas.

    • A biaxial capacitance strain transducer in the form of a laminated structure defining two capacitance strain transducers in orthogonal orientation. Each capacitance strain transducer comprises driven capacitance plates which are excited by an oscillator and a sensing capacitance plate disposed in spaced parallel relation to the driven capacitance plates. A shutter mechanism in the form of a pair of apertured plates is provided between the driven plates and the sensing plates. The ends of the apertured plates extend out of the laminated structure and are attached to the surface wherein strain is to be measured. Strain will produce relative displacement of the apertured plates, resulting in variation in the capacitive coupling between the sensing and driven plates through the apertures. This differential capacitance, which is thus related to the strain to be measured, is detected and measured by suitable electronic instrumentation.
