    • An approach for establishing secure multicast communication among multiple multicast proxy service nodes is disclosed. The multicast proxy service nodes, which can be distributed throughout an enterprise domain, are organized in a logical tree that mimics the logical tree arrangement of domains in a directory server system. The attributes of the multicast proxy service nodes include the group session key and the private keys of the multicast proxy service nodes that are members of the multicast or broadcast groups. The private keys provide unique identification values for the multicast proxy service nodes, thereby facilitating distribution of such keys. Because keys as well as key version information are housed in the directory, multicast security can be achieved over any number of network domains across the entire enterprise. Key information is stored in, and the logical tree is supported by, a directory service. Replication of the directory accomplishes distribution of keys. Multicast proxy service nodes may obtain current key information from a local copy of the replicated directory.

    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for modifying a subscription of a subscriber to a telecommunications service based on subscriber information and service information that are stored in a directory repository. A directory-enabled service selection framework is coupled to the directory repository for receiving stored information therefrom. The directory-enabled service selection framework receives a request to identify one or more services to which a subscriber is subscribed, based on a prior request to modify the subscription of the subscriber to the telecommunications service. A list is generated of the one or more services to which the subscriber is currently subscribed, based on group membership of the subscriber, one or more roles occupied by the subscriber, and authorization information associated with the subscriber that is stored in the directory repository. Individual service information is generated for each of the one or more services in the list, based on subscriber information and service information that is stored in the directory repository, for use in automatically subscribing the subscriber to a service that is represented by the individual service information. Accordingly, using user information and service information in a directory, a user is automatically subscribed to network services and logged into services.

    • Client network devices and configuration servers are used together to automatically configure the client network devices. Configuration information for multiple network devices is arranged in a multi-level directory. Leaf nodes in a hierarchical directory correspond to specific network devices. Configuration information associated with such leaf nodes is specific to the associated network device. Configuration information common to a group of network devices is provided with nodes at higher levels in the hierarchy. All network devices grouped under such higher levels inherit the configuration parameters from the higher level nodes. During configuration, all nodes from a leaf to the root of a directory are traversed. The parameters associated with each node are aggregated to obtain a set of parameters provided to the client network device. These aggregated parameters are used to automatically configure the client network device.
