    • A non-linear amplifier is linearized using interpolation-based digital pre-distortion (DPD). In one embodiment, the digital input signal is interpolated to generate a higher-sample-rate signal that is then pre-distorted. The resulting higher-sample-rate pre-distorted signal is then decimated to generate a final pre-distorted digital signal that is converted into an analog pre-distorted signal by a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) before being applied to the amplifier. In a polyphase embodiment, different versions of the original input digital signal are generated, where each version is then pre-distorted using a different DPD module to generate a different intermediate pre-distorted digital signal. The intermediate pre-distorted signals are filtered and combined to generate the final pre-distorted digital signal. In both embodiments, better linearization (e.g., less aliasing) can be achieved without increasing the sample rate of the DAC and, in the polyphase embodiment, without increasing the processing speed of the DPD modules.

    • Radio frequency (RF) mobile telephone communications signals are converted to cable television (CATV) frequencies for transmission over existing CATV infrastructure. In the upstream path (i.e., from one or more mobile telephones to a base station), multiple receivers (called remote converters) receive and convert RF signals to cable signals. The cable signals from different receivers are combined by a remote cable node and transmitted over tie cable network to tie base station. In order to reduce noise in the combined cable signal, only those remote converters that receive RF signals of sufficient power level will contribute cable signals to the combined signal. This scheme enables the communications network to be configured with a greater number of relatively inexpensive, low-power remote converters for each remote cable node while still maintaining signal integrity.

    • In one embodiment, a non-linear power amplifier generates an amplified output signal based on a pre-distorted signal generated by a digital pre-distorter based on an input signal. A feedback path generates a feedback waveform based on the amplified output signal. The feedback waveform is aligned in time with the input signal at the waveform level to identify a corresponding reference waveform. The feedback waveform and the corresponding reference waveform are both divided into a plurality of sub-waveforms. Each feedback sub-waveform is independently aligned in phase with its corresponding reference sub-waveform. The resulting plurality of phase-aligned feedback sub-waveforms are then combined to form a hybrid-aligned waveform that is compared to the reference waveform to adaptively update the digital pre-distorter.

    • A device for filtering wide-band signals at radio frequencies is usable either in a base station cellular telephony system or separately. The wide-band signal occupies a total frequency band comprising frequency bands allocated to that signal and a central frequency band extraneous to that wide-band signal. Within the device, the wide-band signal is mixed with a heterodyne wave to translate the signal from RF to IF. The signal at IF is then filtered by two surface acoustic wave (SAW) band-pass filters which have respective pass bands which correspond at IF to the allocated frequency bands of the wide-band signal, and which the SAW filters have the filtering effect of passing with low attenuation signals in those allocated bands while substantially attenuating signals and/or noise in the central extraneous frequency band between those allocated bands. The wide-band signal after being so filtered either remains at IF when supplied from the device or, in a subsequent stage of the device, is again mixed with the heterodyne wave to be restored back to RF. The heterodyne wave may be adjustable in frequency.
