摘要： A planar, rigid substrate made from a porous, inorganic material coated with cationic polymer molecules for attachment of an array of biomolecules, such as DNA, RNA, oligonucleotides, peptides, and proteins. The substrate has a top surface with about at least 200 to about 200,000 times greater surface area than that of a comparable, non-porous substrate. The cationic polymer molecules are anchored on the top surface and in the pores of the porous material. In high-density applications, an array of polynucleotides of a known, predetermined sequence is attached to this cationic polymer layer, such that each of the polynucleotide is attached to a different localized area on the top surface. The top surface has a surface area for attaching biomolecules of approximately 387,500 cm2/cm2 of area (˜7.5 million cm2/1×3 inch piece of substrate). Each pore of the plurality of pores in the top surface of the substrate has a pore radius of between about 40 Å to about 75 Å. Not only does the cationic coating in and over the pores of the substrate greatly increase the overall positive charge on the substrate surface, but also given the size of the pores provides binding sites to which biomolecules can better attach.

摘要： A porous inorganic substrate and method of fabricating such substrate for attaching an array of biological or chemical molecules to be used in a high-density microarray device. The substantially planar substrate comprises a porous inorganic layer adhered to a flat, rigid, non-porous, inorganic understructure having a coefficient of thermal expansion compatible with that of the porous inorganic layer. The porous inorganic layer is characterized as having dispersed throughout it a plurality of interconnecting voids as defined by a network of contiguous inorganic material, each of a predetermined mean size. The continuous inorganic material and contents of the voids exhibit a high contrast in their indices of refraction relative to each other. The substrate further comprises a uniform coating of a binding agent over at least a part of the surface area of the voids and the top surface of the porous inorganic layer.

摘要： A system and method are disclosed for converting exhaust gas which comprises NO.sub.x, CO, and hydrocarbons, to innocuous products. Exhaust gas is contacted in undiverted flow with a zeolite suitable for adsorption of hydrocarbons, and with a main catalyst suitable for conversion of NO.sub.x, CO, and hydrocarbons to innocuous products. Adsorption occurs when the temperature of the zeolite is suitable therefor. Conversion occurs when the temperature of the main catalyst is suitable therefor. The zeolite and main catalyst are connected directly to one another, that is, in-line, without by-pass valving. The zeolite can be Y zeolite, Beta, ZSM-5, and combinations thereof, and has a SiO.sub.2 to Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, mole ratio of no greater than about 200, and is ion exchanged with a metal which can be rare earth, chromium, and combinations thereof.

The catalysts may be singly and/or multiply dispersed on and/or throughout a high surface area material and subsequently mixed with batch material prior to firing the structure. This results in a structure wherein encapsulated catalyst-agglomerate bodies in a porous structure exhibit the same catalytic activity as in a break in aged catalyst coated substrate.

摘要： Substantially spherical mono-sized particles of zirconia can be prepared by the forced hydrolysis of an aqueous solution of zirconyl chloride. A zirconyl chloride solution having a molarity up to about 0.4 is heated for at least 72 hours at a temperature of at least 95.degree. C. to generate suspended particles of hydrated zirconium oxide, which are recovered and calcined to provide the mono-sized zirconia powders. In preferred embodiments, mono-sized powders of a mixture of zirconia with one or more of its stabilizing metal oxides is prepared by precipitating the metal in the form of its hydroxide onto pre-formed zirconium-containing particles.

摘要： A method of forming graded index, nitrogen-doped optical waveguides. A cylindrically-shaped porous preform comprising at least two oxides is initially formed. One of the oxides, which more readily reacts with nitrogen, has a greater concentration near the center of the preform than at the outer portion thereof. The preform is treated with a nitrogen-containing compound to form a porous body having a greater concentration of nitrogen in the central portion thereof. The porous preform is consolidated and drawn into an optical waveguide filament.
