    • A design method for making a bituminous mixture that is used to form a vapor-permeable layer of pavement is provided. This design procedure includes preparing one or more bituminous mixture test specimens, measuring the performance of these specimens, and selecting a desirable bituminous mixture for paving that is vapor-permeable based on the performance of the specimens. Another aspect of the present invention is the selected bituminous mixture, which includes aggregate and a bituminous binder. The aggregate should be selected such that no more than about 5% by mass of the aggregate and preferably no more than about 3.5% by mass of the aggregate is able to pass through a 75 μm sieve. The selected bituminous mixture should have an Air Permeability Value that is at least about 8 cm2 so as to reduce its propensity for blistering during and after construction. Still further, the selected bituminous mixture should have desirable fatigue resistance and should be substantially water-impermeable.

    • Systems and methods for mortgage portfolio evaluation are provided. Some embodiments of the present invention use a synthetic pool model as part of the process for evaluating and pricing mortgage servicing rights (MSR). In some embodiments, the synthetic pool model can identify a static pool of loans from the servicing portfolio (e.g., portfolio of residential mortgages) with collateral characteristics similar to the loans in the bid pool. Performance reports can then be created from the synthetic pool in order to estimate the performance of the loan servicer based on actual historical performance of a portfolio with similar characteristics. In addition, these reports can quantify performance assumptions for use in an MSR pricing model.

    • A variable steam flow assembly for a steam iron includes a metering valve which does not depend on axial movement of a valve member with respect to a valve seat to control the steam flow rate, as in conventional metering valves, thus allowing the steam flow rate to be more accurately controlled. The metering valve includes a cylindrical gasket having a transverse bore disposed intermediate the ends. Longitudinal bores between each end of the gasket and the transverse bore define a plurality of flow passageways through the valve. A valving member is rotatably received in the transverse bore. Rotation of the valving member allows various flow passageways to be selected. The valving member is mechanically coupled to a steam flow control knob disposed on the exterior of the steam iron housing. The steam flow control knob is provided with a plurality of detent positions to allow a finite number of flow rates to be selected. A drip tube provided at the discharge of the metering valve prevents the valve member from being in direct communication with the steam generator. This reduces the possibility of mineral deposits forming on the valve member due to spattering resulting from the boiling of water droplets in the steam generator; hence changing the flow rate. The drip tube is provided with longitudinal bores of smaller diameter than the gasket that determine the flow rate through the valve.
