摘要： The present invention provides a sized glass fiber strand adapted to reinforce a polymeric matrix material. The sizing composition includes a polyamide which is the reaction product of a polycarboxylic acid and a polyoxyalkylene amine; an acrylic polymer which is essentially free of epoxy functionality; a coupling agent and a fiber lubricant which is different from the polyamide, the sizing composition being essentially free of a urethane-containing polymer. Composites reinforced with the sized glass fiber strand and a method of reinforcing a composite are also provided.

摘要： Chemically treated glass fibers having good processability are useful in producing fiber reinforced polymeric matrices, wherein the glass fibers have controlled wettability and are not detrimental to the weatherability of the fiber reinforced polymeric matrices. The chemically treated fibers have the dried residue of an aqueous chemical treating composition having a bisphenol A polyester film forming polymer compatible with and soluble in the matrix polymer, poly(vinyl acetate) polymeric film former, acryloxy-containing or methacryloxy-containing organo coupling agent in an effective coupling agent amount, cationic fiberous lubricant in an effective lubricating amount, with or without a cationic organic quaternary ammonium salt having alkoxy moieties, and with water in an amount to give a total solid for the aqueous chemical treating composition in the range of about 1 to about 30 weight percent. In addition, the aqueous chemical treating composition can have one or more amino-containing organofunctional silane coupling agents. The amount of the organic quaternary ammonium agent generally is in the range of from 0.05 to around 0.4 weight percent of the aqueous chemical treating composition. When this agent is not in the aqueous chemical treating composition, a secondary application of an antistatic agent is performed. The chemically treated glass fibers can be produced in any form such as chopped strand or continuous strand for combination with polymeric matrices including both filled and unfilled systems for producing reinforced polymeric matrices such as glass fiber reinforced polymeric panels which can be clear, translucent or pigmented.

摘要： An aqueous sizing composition for glass fibers particularly useful for the reinforcement of thermoplastic or thermosetting matrix polymers contains film-forming material, fluorescent whitening agent, coupling agent, stabilizing agent and lubricant. The film-forming material is selected to be compatible with thermosetting or thermoplastic matrix polymer used in the ultimate forming process. The fluorescent whitening agent is at least dispersed, emulsified or solubilized in water.The sizing compositions are particularly advantageous for sizing glass fibers to be used in the reinforcement of matrix polymers for forming molded parts. The resultant molded part exhibits exceptional whiteness and and comparable physical properties to materials without the brightening agent.

The stabilizer is one or more of the following: i) phosphinates selected from the group consisting of alkali metal phosphinates, alkaline earth metal phosphinates, ammonium phosphinate, organic phosphinates and mixtures thereof; ii) phosphonites selected from the group consisting of alkali metal phosphonites, alkaline earth metal phosphonites, ammonium phosphonite, organic phosphonites and mixtures thereof; iii) phosphites selected from the group consisting of alkali metal phosphites, alkaline earth metal phosphites, ammonium phosphite, organic phosphites and mixtures thereof; iv) hypophosphites selected from the group consisting of alkali metal hypophosphites, alkaline earth metal hypophosphites, ammonium hypophosphite and mixtures thereof; v) sulfites selected from the group consisting of alkali metal sulfites, alkaline earth metal sulfites, ammonium sulfite and mixtures thereof. vi) bisulfites selected from the group consisting of alkali metal bisulfites, alkaline earth metal bisulfites, ammonium bisulfite and mixtures thereof; and vii) mixture of one or more of the stabilizers of i through vi with an antioxidant selected from the group consisting of hindered phenols, diarylamines, thioethers and mixtures thereof, Optionally the size contains as a lubricant one or more partial esters of a branched carboxylic acid copolymer present. Sized glass fibers prepared with the aforesaid sizing composition result in improved color and mechanical properties in polyolefin composites reinforced with the sized fibers.
