    • Methods and apparatus for providing security for mobile devices are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method includes maintaining responsibility for a first item when the first item is in a first range of a first container. Maintaining responsibility for the first item includes monitoring a locator tag associated with the first item when the locator tag is within the first range. The method also includes determining when the first item is in the first range, determining if the first item is in a second range associated with a second container when the first item is not in the first range, and determining if the second container is trusted with respect to the first container if the first item is in the second range. Additionally, the method includes transferring responsibility for the first item to the second container if the second container is trusted with respect to the first container.

    • In a network communication system passing messages between gateways via a message handling system the gateways are interfaced specifically to their respective network access units and are interfaced generically to the message handling system using routines common to all gateways. Messages are sent in protocol data units including recipient addresses which do not identify recipient gateways as such; the gateways are used transparently. The data format is CCITT 1988 X400 standard with automatic conversion to and from this format at sending and receiving gateways plus automatic document conversion. Message handling involves waiting for many services and events. The invention allows calling routines to avoid pending while waiting for events and services. Service routines, including event watching and timer routines, schedule notifications on to queues and the main processing task runs notifications off the queues by calling a run routine.

    • A data transmission system comprising a plurality of reconfiguring devices (1-6) and a method of reconfiguring such devices. Each device (1-6) has a plurality of input and output data links (9-12), the devices being connected in a ring (18) whereby for each reconfiguring device data is received on one data input link (9) and transferred to one data output link (11) such that data may be passed between all the reconfiguring devices along the ring. Each device includes fault recovery means for detecting the presence of a fault in the ring, the fault recovery means (7) in different devices cooperating to attempt to cause data to be transmitted around a sub-ring when a fault is detected, the sub-ring being constituted at least partially by one or more of the previously unused data links (10, 12) to enable a number of the devices (1-6) to continue to communicate; and merging means (7) for detecting that a new reconfiguring device is connected to at least one pair of previously unused data input and output links and for reconfiguring the ring to include the new device.
