    • A blade for a rotor of a gas turbine engine is constructed with a spar and shell configuration. The spar is constructed in an integral unit or multi-portions and includes a first wall adjacent to the pressure side and a second wall adjacent to the suction side, a tip portion extending in the spanwise direction and extending beyond the first wall and the second wall and a root portion extending longitudinally, an attachment portion having a central opening for receiving the root portion and a platform portion. The root portion fits into the central opening and is secured therein by a pin extending transversely through the attachment and the root portion. The shell fits over the spar and is supported thereto by a plurality of complementary hooks extending from the spar and shell. The ends of the shell fit into grooves formed on the tip portion and the platform.

    • Laser systems in which efficiency and high repetition rate operation are obtained utilize an active laser medium consisting of pentaphosphate with high concentration doping of a rare earth such as neodymium and a pumping means in optical contact with the active medium which produces pump radiation confined to a band which essentially overlaps the absorption band of the laser medium. An active mirror configuration is described with thin layer of pentaphosphate active medium on one side of a substrate which is transmissive to the pump radiation. The pump radiation is provided by an excimer laser or by a semiconductor converter layer which is excited by flash lamps. The laser medium may be segmented with the space between segments occupied by material absorptive of amplified spontaneous emission wavelengths. The laser system is especially useful in laser fusion systems.

    • A segmented floating seal assembly used in a gas turbine engine to seal a rotary shaft. The segmented seal is made from a fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composite (FRCMC) material having a polymer-derived pre-ceramic resin in its ceramic state, fibers of Nextel, and a filler material. The seal segments are secured to respective support plates, and the support plates are each biased by a spring member secured to a support ring mounted in the engine. The material in the seal segments are resistive to very high temperatures, are not brittle, allow little flow across the seal face, and durable.

    • A test facility is provided for testing materials under high temperature, pressure, and mechanical loads. The facility provides a physically scaled system that simulates conditions in hot sections of gas turbine engines. A test article is coated with a test material and exposed to a hot combusting flow in a test section housing. The article may be a pipe or conduit member oriented at any direction to the flow. A second cooler flow of fluid is channeled through the test article to create a sharp temperature gradient in the test article and through the test material. A liquid-cooled sleeve is disposed about the test article to create an annular channel of combusting flow over the test article. The downstream end of the second cooler flow is connected to the upstream end of the main hot flow at the combustion chamber.
