    • In a copying machine comprising a photoconductive belt (5) that is moved past a number of processing stations in order to make copies, the belt (5) is divided relative to a reference point into a plurality of imaging sections each of which is capable of copy formation. Each imaging section is subject to deterioration as a function of the number of times a copy has been made with the use of that imaging section. A control circuit (100, 110) is provided comprising a counter memory (102) that for each imaging section stores the number of copies made with the use of that imaging section. The control circuit (100, 110) further comprises means (103, 105, 106, 107) which, as a function of the count in the memory (102) for a particular imaging section, adjust one or more of the processing stations when a processing station is acting on that imaging section. The control circuit (110) further comprises means (116, 120, 121, 122, 123) to prevent copy formation on a particular imaging section when that imaging section is no longer suitable for copy formation either because having been used a maximum number of times in copy formation or because of having been damaged.

    • In electrographic copying apparatus of the type in which a powder image is transferred from a moving surface to a surface moving in pressing contact with it and then is transferred from the latter surface to a sheet of copy paper, pollution of the transfer station by powder is avoided by providing one of the two surfaces with at least one receding surface portion which recedes away from the other surface so as not to make contact with it, and causing a receding surface portion to be positioned opposite to the other surface so that the two surfaces are not in contact when no image transfer is being effected, such, for instance, as when powder images are not being formed or when a copy sheet is not being supplied so as to receive an image formed. Preferably, a roller for receiving and transferring each powder image from a moving photoconductive belt or drum is provided with two diametrically opposite receding surface portions located between two image receiving surface portions each of which is formed by a soft resilient coating layer, the area of which is the same as or slightly smaller than that of the sheet of copy paper.

    • For control of an indirect electrophotographic copier employing an endless photoconductive belt having thereon at least one marking which excites a sensor each time the marking passes a fixed point in the belt path, the movement of the belt is measured electronically by a pulse generator coupled to a belt transport roller and a counter. Any difference between an electronically registered length of the belt and its actual length at a moment of sensor excitation is registered in a memory. At the end of a copying run pulses from the generator are diverted to the memory which then causes the difference to be corrected by discontinuation of the driving of the belt at an earlier or later moment.

    • An electrophotographic copying apparatus employing a moving endless photoconductive belt for image formation and image transfer is provided with a control system whereby images are formed on the belt at fixed locations relative to at least one marking on the belt, without need to make the belt precisely to a certain length or to provide more than a single marking which, if the belt is made endless by a seam, can be located near the seam to enable skipping of the seam in the imaging operations. The control system includes a detector for emitting a signal pulse upon being passed by a marking and two substantially identical partial circuits, each operable to emit control signals for activating or inactivating processing stations that together form a processing zone traversed by the belt, and a switching circuit for starting the operation of one of the partial circuits in response to the signal pulse while the other partial circuit is and continues operating to complete the processing of the last imaging belt portion that entered the processing zone before the emission of the signal pulse.
