    • In an electrostatographic recording apparatus and method of forming images on a charge retentive surface such as a photoconductive member using a single writer source, the surface is uniformly charged by a corona charger to a predetermined voltage potential level. An image frame is then exposed on a pixel by pixel basis with varying amounts of exposure by the source for at least some pixels to form a tri-state type of latent image on the image frame including a charged area developable (CAD) latent image having at least some exposed pixels at various different sub-levels of exposure within the CAD latent image, a discharged-area developable (DAD) latent image having at least some exposed pixels at various different sub-levels of exposure within said discharged area developable image, and a background area The DAD and CAD latent images are then developed with toners of two different colors by two different developer sources. A second image frame of the uniformly charged surface is also exposed on a pixel by pixel basis with varying amounts of exposure by the source for at least some pixels to form a monochrome latent image wherein at least some exposed pixels are exposed at various different levels of exposure. The monochrome latent image is developed using one of the developer sources and this source is biased differently on the monochrome exposure made from the bias used in the two-color exposure mode. Data representing multicolor pixels are analyzed in accordance with criteria and a determination is made as to whether the pixel is to be recorded in black or another color in the tri-state recording mode.

    • In a non-impact recording apparatus that includes a plurality of recording elements, there is provided a source of first data signals representing for each of plural pixels density, size or percentage of coverage for recording. A first look-up table memory is responsive to the first data signals for adjusting the density, size or percentage coverage of each of the pixels with a gamma adjustment related to density development by the apparatus and generates multibit gamma adjusted second data signals. A second look-up table memory generates a third signal related to a characteristic of the recording elements such as for nonuniformity correction. A process look-up table memory is responsive to the gamma adjusted second data signals and the third signals for generating fourth multibit signals relating to exposure on-times for recording pixels by the recording elements. The use of the three look-up table memories results in substantial saving in memory requirements.

    • A non-impact printer apparatus includes a printhead having a plurality of recording elements. Nonuniformities in emission characteristics of the recording elements are corrected using look-up tables (LUT) assemblages that include a first LUT wherein the recording elements are binned in accordance with bin values associated with their emission characteristics and a second LUT wherein bin values, output from the first LUT are used to address various tables providing exposure correction. The first and second LUTs are advantageously dual port RAM devices that allow operation during printing while simultaneously allowing loading of data into the tables for use for subsequent printing. Thus, process conditions may be continually monitored and correction data updated without delaying of current printing which may occur using correction data already stored in the LUT assemblages.

    • A non-impact printer apparatus and method employs a printhead including a plurality of recording elements and drivers for driving respective recording elements in response to data relative to respective corrected exposure times for recording respective pixels. A first data storage device stores data relative to associating sets of respective recording elements with respective bins. The first data storage device is responsive to first input signals identifying respective recording elements and outputs second signals relative to respective bin assignment numbers for the respective recording elements. A second data storage device is responsive to the second signals for outputting data relative to corrected exposure times for recording respective pixels by respective recording elements. The bin assignment determination for recording elements are established by propagating exposure error calculated from an adjacent respective recording element. This is done so that low resolution spatial frequency errors in cross-track recording noticeable by the eye are generally substantially lower than high resolution spatial frequency errors to reduce visible artifacts in recording.
