    • Systems and methods for executing program instructions in a data processor at a variable rate. In one embodiment, a processor is configured to examine received instructions, identify an execution time associated with each instruction, and generate clock pulses at necessary intervals to obtain the appropriate execution time for each instruction. Instructions may be associated with types or “bins” that are in turn associated with corresponding execution times. The clock pulses may be generated by routing successive pulses through circuits that delay the pulses by desired amounts of time. The processor may also be configured to identify instructions which are input/output (I/O) instructions and are initiated or terminated by completion of handshake procedures and therefore have execution times that vary from one instance to the next.

    • A passive investment system based on indices created from various metrics is disclosed. The indexes may be built with metrics other than market capitalization weighting, price weighting or equal weighting. These metrics may include, but are not limited to book value, sales, revenue, earnings, earnings per share, income, income growth rate, dividends, dividends per share, earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, etc. Non-financial metrics may also be used to build indexes to create passive investment systems. Additionally, a combination of financial non-market capitalization metrics may be used along with non-financial metrics to create passive investment systems. Once the index is built, it may be used as a basis to purchase securities for a portfolio. As the data underlying the indexes changes because of, e.g., economic activity, the index may be updated and may be used as a basis to rebalance the portfolio. Alternatively, the index can be rebalanced when a pre-determined threshold is reached. Specifically excluded are widely-used capitalization-weighted indexes and price-weighted indexes, in which the price of a security contributes in a substantial way to the calculation of the weight of that security in the index or the portfolio. Valuation indifferent indexes of the present invention avoid overexposure to overvalued securities and underexposure to undervalued securities, as compared with conventional capitalization-weighted and price-weighted. Also specifically excluded are equal weighting weighted indexes.

    • Systems and methods for processing variable precision data using tags to identify the positions of digits within data words. One embodiment comprises a processor having internal structures that are configured to represent a variable precision data word as a variable number of digits, where each digit includes a digit value and associated tags indicative of the digit's position within the data word. The digit value may comprise an 8-bit value, and the tags may include single bits indicating whether the digit is the first and/or last digit in the variable precision word. The processor may be coupled to other variable precision devices by variable precision communication channels. The processor may be coupled to external devices that represent with fixed precision, and may use aliases to provide mappings between the variable precision data and fixed precision data, automatically adding or removing the tags associated with the digits, as necessary.

    • A method and apparatus for reading digital audio signals photographically recorded on a medium (such as motion picture film). If the medium has multiple, spatially separated digital and analog audio soundtracks, a photosensitive detector array is employed for each of the digital audio soundtrack areas, and a separate analog soundtrack read head is employed. Preferably, digital error code is recorded in a digital soundtrack area of the medium (with digital audio bits), and error detection and correction are performed on the recorded digital audio bits read from the medium. Preferably, the apparatus includes switching circuitry for substituting a corresponding analog audio signal for one or more corrupted digital soundtrack channels, when such digital soundtrack channels have an error rate which exceeds a selected threshold. Also preferably, the invention reads recorded digital audio information by projecting a laser beam (having a near infrared wavelength) on a row of a digital soundtrack area of a motion picture film, to modulate the beam as it passes through the row. The radiation transmitted through each digital soundtrack bit area is projected onto a spot in the detector plane that is substantially larger than the dimension of each individual detector which receives the spot. As the film translates continuously relative to the radiation source so that the projection of the spot translates relative to each receiving detector, the output of each receiving detector is integrated over the period during which a portion of the spot is projected thereon.
