More particularly, the present invention relates to an exercise machine having separately supported pedals for the feet and arm exercise coordinated with the motion of the feet where the pedal stride length is determined by the movements of an operator. Crank arms are positioned on the framework forward the operator at a height comparable to the pedals. Compound guides are used to achieve elliptical curve pedal paths.

More particularly, the present invention relates to an exercise machine having separately supported pedals for the feet and arm exercise coordinated with the motion of the feet. The pedals articulate to provide lower leg exercise with the heel and toe remaining in contact with the pedal while the pedals move along an inclined elliptical pedal curve. Arm exercise is adjustable to accommodate different size operators. A step through region free of linkage is provided for easy ingress and egress.

More particularly, the present invention relates to an adjustable drive mechanism configured for an operator driven or motor driven exercise apparatus such as a stationary bicycle, recumbent stationary bicycle, cross trainer or other devices such as a bicycle. The present invention relates to the kinematic motion control of pedals which follow more complex curves that can be changed with the adjustable drive. More particularly, an adjustable drive mechanism based upon a pair of crank linkages and belt assembly can be incorporated into several exercise apparatus to drive a load resistance.

In the preferred embodiment, the deck is suspended by a pair of cables on either side of the deck which terminate in cushions. A second pair of cables couple the intermediate deck to the framework with cushion adjustment to provide a soft or stiff cushion deck. Deck deformation distributes foot impact to a variety of shock absorption cushions to reduce leg injuries from extended exercise.

Existing machines often produce user problems such as excessive foot articulation. The present invention is an improved elliptical exercise machine capable of extended exercise with fewer user problems. Further, the cross trainer is adjustable to vary the motion of the elliptical stride from walking to climbing.A foot support member is guided by a roller on one end and driven by a crank linkage on the other end. The resulting pedal motion has less severe pedal angles than a simple crank cross trainer. Handles are coupled to the foot support member with connector links for coordinated arm exercise.
