    • A communications terminal using interleaving may be awakened at certain times. The paging message determines whether the terminal will remain awake or it can return to sleep. The amount of time that the communications terminal is awakened may be reduced by determining whether it is necessary to demodulate all of the available time slots. In many cases, it may be possible, based on the environment in which terminal finds itself and the quality of the signals it receives, to obtain the necessary information without demodulating symbols from all the time slots in which symbols of the message are transmitted. As a result the period to receive the paging message may be reduced and the power consumption may likewise be reduced.

    • Systems and methods are provided for transmitting and receiving an uplink state flag (USF) in a cellular network. A base station may transmit the USF to plurality of mobile stations that share the same frequency channel, and each mobile station can use the USF to determine whether that mobile station can transmit data in an upcoming uplink time period. The base station can encode the USF bits into a plurality of encoded USF symbols, where the encoded USF symbols may be selected from corner signal points in a QAM signal constellation set or from signal points adjacent to the corners of a QAM signal constellation set. The base station can interleave the encoded USF symbols and modulate the encoded USF symbols for transmission using the signal constellation set. A mobile station that can communication with the base station can include a corresponding receiver, de-interleaver, and decoder.

    • Apparatus and methods for reducing the amount of time a mobile wireless device needs to be in a wake mode in order to determine whether a particular paging message is or is not directed to the mobile wireless device. The method includes: receiving, by a mobile device of a wireless network, a first paging message; processing, by the mobile device, a portion of the first paging message including comparing the processed portion of the first paging message with a processed portion of a second paging message previously received by the mobile device; and determining, by the mobile device, whether to process other portions of the first paging message based at least in part on the comparison.
