    • A system and method to identify pictures in documents. An image representing a page of a document is received. The image is analyzed to identify text objects in the page. A masked image is generated by masking out regions of the image including the text objects in the page. Groups of pixels in the masked image are identified, wherein a respective group of pixels corresponds to at least one picture in the page. When there is one or more groups of pixels, regions for pictures are identified based on the one or more groups of pixels. Metadata tags for the pictures are stored, wherein a respective metadata tag for a respective picture includes information about a respective bounding box for the respective picture.

    • Described is system that characterizes segments of document with one or more keyphrases and then uses keyphrases to help users find interesting parts of document. Keyphrases are displayed with information about the location of the phrase in the document and are used as pointers to quickly move to from overview to section of potential interest. In another implementation, when there are many documents in a collection, inventive multi-document view can be used to reduce number of documents presented, helping user to more efficiently find documents of interest. In this view, a user (possibly repeatedly) filters documents displayed based on metadata values. In one implementation, icons corresponding to documents are displayed on a display device together with metadata corresponding to the documents. When the value of the metadata is selected by the user, display state of the icons corresponding to document is varied based on selected value of metadata.

    • Systems and methods are directed to use-based product searching. Raw product information data, such as product features, specifications, and user reviews are processed and analyzed using pattern-based text analysis to extract relevant product aspects and uses. The aspects are weighted in relation to their importance for various uses, and the corresponding aspects and their weights are linked to the uses. A user selects uses for a product, which correspond to weighted aspects, and the weights for the aspects are used to rank products using the weights of the aspects linked to the selected uses. The ranked products are presented to the user in a customizable interface. The user may directly specify weights for the extracted aspects to further customize the ranked list of products. The interface provides additional options for viewing product details, opinions and comparisons.
