[Class 110(iii)] In an axial flow gas turbine rotor having hollow sheet metal blades mounted thereon by means of root walls constituting continuations of the blade walls, at least one of the walls lies outside of the flank of the rotor element and defines therewith an air duct communicating with the inside of the blade. Hollow sheet metal blades are defined as blades made of thin flat sheet or thin tube. The blades shown in Figs. 1 and 3 are attached to the rotor 2 in the manner described in Specification 650,424. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the rim of the wheel 2 is indented at 6 to afford residence to the rotor rim. This indentation is, according to the present invention, carried to a point radially within the lower edge of the blade skirt 7 to provide an inlet for cooling air to the interior of the blade 1. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the blade root has a third wall 4a spaced from the flank of the rotor by indentations 8 so as to form a duct 9 leading into the interior of the blade. In another modification the cooling air passage is formed by pressing, a channel in the wall 4a. A fourth root wall also having a channel pressed in it may be provided. The invention is not limited to blades attached by axially disposed slotted anchorages in the rotor wheel. The use of peripherally extending root walls suitably secured to the. axially exposed face of the rotor is referred to.
