    • In a surface-discharge-type alternating-current plasma display panel, a discharge cell is divided into two cells: a display discharge cell C1 providing for a sustaining discharge between transparent electrodes Xa, Ya of row electrodes X, Y; and an addressing discharge cell C2 which is opposite a bus electrode Yb of the row electrode Y, giving rise to an addressing discharge in association with a column electrode D, to provide for the addressing discharge between the bus electrode Yb of the row electrode Y and a column electrode D. The display discharge cells C1 and the addressing discharge cells C2 of the discharge cells are interposed in alternate positions in the column direction so as to arrange the addressing discharge cells C2 in a back-to-back position in the column direction.

    • A partition wall defines individual discharge cells. A second lateral wall partitions each of the discharge cells into a display discharge cell opposing two transparent electrodes of the paired row electrodes and allowing for a sustain discharge, and an addressing discharge cell opposing a bus electrode of one of the paired row electrodes and allowing for an addressing discharge produced between the bus electrode and a column electrode. A clearance is provided between the display discharge cell and the addressing discharge cell to establish communication from the addressing discharge cell to the display discharge cell. A high null material layer is provided on an area facing the addressing discharge cell.

    • A plasma display panel includes a front substrate and a rear substrate, with a discharge space therebetween. Row and column electrodes extend on an inner surface of the front substrate. Each display line is defined by paired two adjacent row electrodes. A dielectric layer covers the row electrodes. Unit light-emission areas are formed in the discharge space at intersections of the row and column electrodes. A partition wall matrix comparts the unit light-emission areas from each other. A separation wall divides each unit light-emission area into a first discharge cell, in which discharge occurs across the paired two adjacent row electrodes associated with that unit light-emission area, and a second discharge cell, in which discharge occurs across one of the paired two adjacent row electrodes and the column electrode concerned. The first discharge cell communicates with the second discharge cell via a passage in each unit light-emission area.

    • A plasma display panel capable of improving dark contrast. A unit light emission region is comprised of a display discharge cell in which a discharge is produced between portions of row electrodes X, Y of each row electrode pair (X, Y) opposing each other, and a reset and address discharge cell arranged in parallel with the display discharge cell, in which a discharge is produced between portions of the row electrode Y and a row electrode X of another adjacent row electrode pair (X, Y). The display discharge cell and reset and address discharge cell are communicated with each other. A light absorbing layer is formed in a portion of the reset and address discharge cell opposing the display surface. According to another aspect, the unit light emission region in the display panel comprises a first discharge cell and a second discharge cell comprising a light absorbing layer. A sustain discharge for emitting light for displaying an image is produced in the first discharge cell, while a variety of control discharges causing light emission not associated with a displayed image are produced in the second discharge cell. According to a further aspect, unit light emission regions are formed at intersections of each of a plurality of first row electrodes and second row electrodes alternately formed on the front substrate such that the first row electrode and the second electrode in each pair are arranged in a reverse order to the preceding pair, and each of a plurality of column electrodes.
