    • A novel compound selected from the group consisting of 7-(or 6- or 4-)thiaprostaglandin E.sub.1 derivatives of the formula (I). ##STR1## wherein A represents --CH.sub.2 -- or ##STR2## in which n is 0, 1 or 2, provided that only one A cut of three is ##STR3## R.sup.1 -R.sup.7 and G are as defined in the specification, the 15-epimers of said thiaprostaglandin E.sub.1 derivatives, the enatiomers of said thiaprostaglandin E.sub.1 derivatives or their 15-epimers, and mixtures of these compounds.A 7-thiaprostaglandin E.sub.1 derivative and/or its optical isomer may be prepared by reacting a 2-organo-2-cyclopentenone (II) with an organic copper-lithium compound (III) to effect conjugation reaction. A 6-thiaprostaglandin E.sub.1 derivative and/or its optical isomer may be prepared by subjecting an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated ketone (IV) and a thiol (V) to the Michael addition reaction. And, 4-thiaprostaglandin derivative and/or its optical isomer may also be prepared by the Michael addition reaction from a 2-allyl substituted cyclopentanone (VI) and a thiol (VIII).Some compounds ((I)-1) amongst the compounds of the formula (I) and/or their optical isomer are useful for controlling vascular actions such as angina pectoris, vasodilation etc.

    • Improvements in a heating system which heats a fluid medium by a heat exchanger and delivers it to an indoor coil or coils for space heating. Refrigerant, such as fluorohydrocarbons for refrigerators, is utilized as the heating medium. The heat exchanger is supplied with heat from a heat source, such as hot water from a boiler, at a temperature higher than that of air around the exchanger. The refrigerant in liquid form is heated while being vaporized in the heat exchanger at a pressure greater than the saturation pressure corresponding to the ambient air temperature. The medium thus gasified to a high pressure and temperature is drawn into a circulating pump and then delivered to the indoor coil or coils, where it is condensed to a liquid with heat dissipation. In this way a great heating capacity is attained with the heating medium at a low rate of circulation. The suction of high-pressure heating medium enables the circulating pump of a small capacity to accomplish not only a high rate of transfer of the heating medium but also a decrease of the compression ratio. These beneficial effects combine to permit substantial reduction of the pump power consumption.

    • A veneer lathe comprising a knife (2) for peeling a log (1), which is secured rotatably to a knife stock, and a roller bar (3) disposed to press a circumferential surface of the log (1) at an upstream side, in relative to said knife (2), of a rotational direction of the log (1). The roller bar (3) has a diameter of not more than 30 mm, and is provided on the circumferential surface thereof with a large number of projections (5) whose height is not higher than the circumferential surface of the roller bar (3). The roller bar (3) is sustained in a sliding bearing (9) and adapted to receive a rotational force from a driving source. The roller bar (3) functions not only as a pressure bar but also as a power transmitting media to rotate the log (1), thereby preventing the generation of lathe check of veneer to be produced.

    • A hydraulic valve lifter is disposed between a cam and a valve. The hydraulic valve lifter comprises a cylindrical lifter body, a cam piston slidably mounted in the lifter body, and a lifter piston slidably mounted in the lifter body. The cam piston engages with the cam and the lifter piston engages with the valve. A hydraulic circuit is provided for supplying oil to an oil chamber in the valve lifter. An electromagnetic relief valve is provided in a relief passage for draining the oil chamber. The relief valve is closed in accordance with engine operating conditions, thereby controlling the valve timing.
