    • The optical density pattern of an original document (26) is sensed during scanning movement for radiating a light image of the document (26) onto a photoconductive belt (27) which is held stationary during the scanning. Operating parameters of the apparatus (21) which are to be controlled after completion of scanning are computed as functions of the sensed pattern. Copy sheets of different sizes are provided, and the copy sheet size is selected to be equal to the sensed width of the document (26). Illumination lamps (37) are selectively energized to discharge non-image portions of the belt (27) between scanning and developing in accordance with the sensed dimensions of the document (26). A developing bias voltage is controlled in accordance with sensed document density and contrast.

    • A drive motor (3) for a photoconductive belt (1) is energized for continuous rotation and connected to the belt (1) through a clutch. The clutch is disengaged and the belt (1) held stationary while an electrostatic image of an original document is formed on the belt (1). Then, the clutch is engaged and the belt (1) driven for developing the electrostatic image into a toner image and transferring and fixing the toner image to a copy sheet. The motor (3) also drives a pulse generator (18) which produces timing pulses. The timing pulses are counted by a counter. A control unit (E19) such as a microcomputer (19) controls the operation of the apparatus in accordance with predetermined counts in the counter. Marks (15.sub.1), (15.sub.2) are provided on the belt (1) in spaced relation. A compensation unit senses the number of timing pulses counted by the counter between sensing of the marks (15.sub.1), (15.sub.2). If the number of timing pulses counted is within a predetermined range which contains a predetermined value but is different from the predetermined value, the predetermined value is set into the counter, thereby compensating for slippage of the belt (1) relative to the motor (3). If the number of timing pulses counted is outside the predetermined range, an alarm is energized. Provision is also made for sensing a period of the timing pulses and energizing an alarm if the period is outside a predetermined range.

    • A control system suitable for control of an image forming apparatus such as a copying machine having a plurality of objects to be controlled. This system comprises a plurality of control units to individually and independently control those objects to be controlled, a monitor control unit to monitor those control units, and a system bus which is commonly connected to the control units and monitor control unit. The control units time-sharingly and cyclically execute their control operations by time-sharingly occupying the system bus one by one. The monitor control unit operates in parallel with the control units. The control units and monitor control unit are formed on the same semiconductor substrate consisting of, for example, Si or GaAs. The system bus may be a LAN bus or an optical fiber. With this control system, each control unit can execute its own control operation irrespective of an interruption request, so that the processing program procedure is simplified and a reliability of control is also improved.
