    • A magnetic tape drive has a drive system to move a magnetic tape longitudinally; servo head(s) for reading servo band information from a magnetic tape as the magnetic tape is moved longitudinally; a magnetic tape read write head configured to read and to write the magnetic tape, having a data write width (w) greater than a normal shingled track pitch width (p) of the magnetic tape; an actuator system for positioning the read write head laterally; and a control. The magnetic tape drive stores an overwrite erase format of non-shingled track pitch longitudinal pattern(s) whose pitch is greater than the normal shingled track pitch width (p); and, the control, in response to activation of overwrite erasure of the tape drive, operates the actuator system and the magnetic tape read write head to write non-data to magnetic tape in the stored overwrite erase format.

    • A servo detection system for detecting servo tracks of a longitudinal tape. In a read/write head, two servo read heads are spaced laterally on a first head module, and a servo read head is on a second head module spaced longitudinally from the first module. A method comprises initially sensing a tape servo track with one servo read head of the first module and the servo read head of the second module to determine skew misalignment of the servo track. A zero reference value is stored representing the determined skew misalignment. The detection system switches from the one servo read head of each module, to the two servo read heads of the first module, and employs the stored value to position the read/write head in the zero skew position. The two servo read heads are then employed to read two servo tracks to identify the data band and to control skew.

    • An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for a tape drive head. An upper servo element reads an upper servo track conforming to a specified format. A lower servo element reads a lower servo track conforming to the specified format. A mid servo element reads a mid servo track. The mid servo element is disposed between the upper servo element and the lower servo element. Sixteen legacy read elements are disposed between the upper server element and the lower servo element. The legacy read elements read legacy data tracks conforming to the specified format. At least eight incremental read elements are interleaved between the legacy read elements. One incremental read element is adjacent to each legacy read element on a side of the legacy read element away from the mid servo element.
